Just some Rumi, in memoriam of the Iranians who died
God, I love this man's poems, and Ghalib's...

Gone to the Unseen

At last you have departed and gone to the Unseen.
What marvelous route did you take from this world?

Beating your wings and feathers,
you broke free from this cage.
Rising up to the sky
you attained the world of the soul.
You were a prized falcon trapped by an Old Woman.
Then you heard the drummer's call
and flew beyond space and time.

As a lovesick nightingale, you flew among the owls.
Then came the scent of the rosegarden
and you flew off to meet the Rose.

The wine of this fleeting world
caused your head to ache.
Finally you joined the tavern of Eternity.
Like an arrow, you sped from the bow
and went straight for the bull's eye of bliss.

This phantom world gave you false signs
But you turned from the illusion
and journeyed to the land of truth.

You are now the Sun -
what need have you for a crown?
You have vanished from this world -
what need have you to tie your robe?

I've heard that you can barely see your soul.
But why look at all? -
yours is now the Soul of Souls!

O heart, what a wonderful bird you are.
Seeking divine heights,
Flapping your wings,
you smashed the pointed spears of your enemy.

The flowers flee from Autumn, but not you -
You are the fearless rose
that grows amidst the freezing wind.

Pouring down like the rain of heaven
you fell upon the rooftop of this world.
Then you ran in every direction
and escaped through the drain spout . . .

Now the words are over
and the pain they bring is gone.
Now you have gone to rest
in the arms of the Beloved.

3. I've heard it said...

...that Rumi, Keats, and whoever wrote the Psalms are incapable of being translated badly, because their poetry is just that good.

5. I wanted to add I think most Muslims disagree with Sufi
but in tolarance, I think the poem is good.

Many good thoughts can be shared by people of many beliefs. I find part of tolerance is able to think on thoughts even from groups that are not of the same belief, without having to change ones own beliefs.

Since I am Christian and not well versed in Islam, I added this web page for some information on the poet's beliefs, since he is referred to as part of Sufi sect.

to read more on the beliefs of Islam about Sufi

7. Well that's great, I liked the poem also.
And as many may noticed I like music and love, and trying to realize many things are interpretation, so I like that parts of it also.

So whats up with that dictionary? Why did it have such a harsh view of the ideas?

I read this web site, there are some interesting views, many I agree with, some not.

13. Most religions are a distortion from what was taught when there was a living master.
The old Sufi stories are wonderful reading. I avoid modern interpretations, they usually miss the point.

9. Used to be in Afghanistan also
Born and lived there, in fact. Too bad those US CIA and Pakistani ISI shitstains saw fit to promote Wahabism.

12. I have heard several times that Iraq
A nation more tolerant than others regarding religion, was the modern day center for Sufi
practitioners in the Moslem world.

10. Rumi's most important teacher came from Iran.
Shams of Tabriz was the one who enlightened Rumi and set him spinning in circles sputtering poetry.

What a great love affair they had.

14. Thanks for that link, I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.
By the way, there now is another translator besides Coleman Barks who makes Rumi soar in the English language. A sample of Andrew Harvey's translation:

This is your own voice

Define and narrow me, you starve yourself of yourself.
Nail me down in a box of cold words,
that box is your coffin.
I do not know who I am.
I am in astounded lucid confusion.
I am not a Christian, I am not a Jew, I am not a Zoroastrian.
And I am not even a Muslim.
I do not belong to the land, or to any known or unknown sea.
Nature cannot own or claim me, nor can heaven;
Nor can India, China, Bulgaria.
My birthplace is placelessness,
My sign to have and give no sign.
You say you see my mouth, ears, eyes, nose—they are not mine.
I am the life of life. I am that cat, this stone, no one.
I have thrown duality away like an old dishrag,
I see and know all times and all worlds
As one, one, always one.
So what do I have to do to get you to admit who is speaking?
Admit it and change everything!
This is your own voice echoing off the walls of God.

~ Rumi
