Amazing.

In 1989, the students at Tiananmen Square were not able to dislodge the regime. But now we have Twitter, et al (I never even HEARD of it until a few months ago), and the Mullahs have no answer for it.

I remember 1979 like it was yesterday (turned 28 that year), and these students weren't even born yet. But look at what they are doing. If they are not killed (and this is NOT 1989), they may just bring down a regime. Wow.

1. I remember '79, too,
and the news took hours to get to us, sometimes a whole day.

Amazing.

During the 1968 Chicago riots at the Democratic convention, as the cops were beating up the demonstrators, the chant went up: "THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING!"

Well, thanks to the Internet(s) tubes and Twitter, the whole world REALLY IS WATCHING!

I'm tickled to have lived long enough to be able to see this.

History is being made. Unbelievable. Wonderful. The Iranians are putting us to shame, the way we just rolled over and accepted the travesty out of the Supreme Court in 2000 that crowned Chimpy Fucknuts King of America.

They're better than we were. Maybe people here (and everywhere) will learn something from them, and isn't it just beautiful that lessons in Power To The People are coming out of Iran.

Iran.

Can you say "Axis Of Evil," Chimpy, you dumb fuck?

3. Great reply. Thanks. Yes, the 1968 Dem Convention would have been interesting on Twitter.
Of course, that means you recall the disco era, too.

Life is never perfect, is it?

12. Disco?
Honey, I remember Patti Page.................

No, it's never perfect - well, there ARE moments - but remember that old Chinese curse?

"May you live in interesting times." These days surely do qualify, don't you think?

4. I don't remember 68 at all, so thanks for your memories.
I don't think we're being put to shame. Our election was a whole lot different, even though it was illegal.

Close to half of this country voted for dimson, unlike the current election. And it took months for the SC to get involved, so unfortunately, unlike hours in Iran.

25. Most of the protests are peaceful and not riots - protestors show maturity and great courage
and put most American protests to shame.

I like the way Twitter can help disseminate information so easily and quickly.

15. They were young in 1979, too.............
You know how well that worked for them.

No, it's not the age, it's the passion coupled with the technological wonders. That's my take on it, anyway.

If they'd had all this in 1979, things would have been very, very different, don't you think? Do you remember how it was then? How lost we were without information?

In fact, it was during the hostage-taking in Iran in 1979 that "Nightline" got its start - it was a program that was designed specifically to report only on the hostages and the situation in Iran. Do you remember that? Each episode was numbered - the number of days since the hostages had been grabbed.

It seems like ancient history now, but, dammit, it put Ronald Reagan in office, and look at what we are now, dealing with the trickle-down of all his administration's failed policies.

Twitter and the Internet(s) tubes would have ............ ah, I can't even think about it........................

Edited on Thu Jun-18-09 10:36 AM by madeline_con
edited for clarity

We weren't starved for information there.

Twitter probably would have come in handy when the "students" took Amrican hostages in Iran.

23. weren't those 1979 guys a bunch of hypocrites?
All they did was replace a brutal secular dictatorship with a brutal religious dictatorship.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..."

28. YES. They went into a religious frenzy when the exiled Ayatollah
got off the plane. They lost their ability to think it through, and this is the result. Now the new generation is left to mop up the mess that their parents brought upon themselves.
