Is the real reason John Ensign and the other couple are keeping quiet,
because the affair was with Doug Hampton and not Cynthia Hampton? Something just seems a bit off whack about this story.

Either in a blackmail way or somehow involved in the "sex end" of what was going on.

11. I figured there would be a response like that. It's the hypocrasy and
nothing else. I have a problem with people saying one thing (strongly anti-GLBT) as Ensign has, and then doing something that completely contradicts their position. Where there is any truth to what I implied in the OP, I have no idea.

19. I didn't see that "clear implication" at all...
if anything, it goes the other way. a republican caught cheating is great, but caught in a gay relationship is ten times better at diminishing their supposedly "moral" angle (because, of course, to a right winger being gay is ten times worse than "simple" cheating).

whenever such a thing occurs (and I'm not saying it did here...but if so it would be hilarious), it only diminishes their hateful agenda all the more.

At least, that's the way I read it.

12. A lot of straight people do 3-ways with both sexes.
It really doesn't mean anyone is deriding gays. The poster seems to be saying that there appears to be a part of this story that is being left out. One of the possibilities is that Ensign was fooling around with someone in the family other than the wife. He did pay the son a lot of money. Why would he do that? It's just a weird story, but then again, we're talking about a Republican here. They seem to love leading almost sinister double lives.

I couldn't give a rat's patootie if Ensign had an affair with Mrs. Hampton, Mr. Hampton or their dog...but I'm sure the lawyers involved do. If Ensign is admitting to an affair, and he used the excuse of a rocky marriage in the past, be assured he had to be thinking any revelation would be served up in divorce papers. While Ensign's career as a high flying politican may be ended or greatly curtailed, he's got far more to lose from a vengeful wife with a smart lawyer.

Yeah, I know we are all just hypothesizing here (which DU does really well!).

It could be a three way (ala John Bolton). He could have knocked up the wife and then paid for an abortion. He could be gay.

Who knows?

23. I tend to believe the "he was being blackmailed" theory.
The announcement would take the wind out of a would be blackmailer's sails.

I still think he has a real chance for a presidential bid in 2012, because fundies are big into "forgiving transgressions" and you know how they forget stuff. He has lots of time for this to fade away before then.

First off, the real smear here is against gays. Not every secret perversion leads to homosexuality, so please stop reflexively equating "bad" with "gay".

Second off, read the fucking news stories. Ensign has a history of having extramarital affairs with women. Female women. If you read the news, it's pretty clear what this is all about. It's about the hokey pokey. The heterosexual, senator-on-aide hokey pokey, just like they did on Dallas and Falcon's Crest. Get some popcorn and enjoy the show.

25. Apparently I have not seen the articals you are referring to. If you would
be so kind as to point me in the direction of those articals, i would be much appreciative. Yes I did do a google search and kept coming up with basically the same story about the affair with the Hamptons.
