Cher supports daughter’s sex-change
Cher supports daughter’s sex-change
Published:Jun 18, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Pop star Cher, 63, has broken her silence over her daughter’s "difficult journey" to change her sex.

In a statement issued late Wednesday to US magazine People, Cher expressed her support on Chastity (Chaz) Bono’s decision to become a man.

Chastity (Chaz) Bono, who is a lesbian, began undergoing sex change operations shortly after her 40th birthday on March 4. She has been active in the gay and lesbian movement for many years.

"She is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support. I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny," Cher said in the statement.

"Although I may not understand, I will strive to be understanding. The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child."

Chastity is the only child of the legendary pop duo Sonny and Cher. The entertainers divorced in 1974 and Bono died in a ski accident in 1998.

In 1998 Cher told People magazine that initially she had a hard time accepting Chastity’s homosexuality.

At first when Chastity was pursuing a career as a rock singer she kept her sexual orientation a secret. But in 1990 a weekly tabloid unveiled her lesbianism.

1. Good. She better. I wish Sonny were alive; this would give him a heart attack.

2. Actually Sonny was very supportive from the beginning
It was Cher that had the problem. Not everyone is a cookie cutter knockoff.

4. Yes, of course she must be supportive, but I'd like to give her some
credit... She has admitted initially needing some time to come around to her daughter's lesbianism--in the glaring light of the public and media.... After decades of having Chastity as her daughter, it can't be easy to turn around on a dime to losing her daughter-- even while she retains her child in the form of a son.... And, once again, very publically.

Good on Cher... I know she will be the support that Chaz deserves, but I hope Cher, too, is given a little space.

5.  "I wish Sonny were alive; this would give him a heart attack". Your quote says a lot about you.

6. When Chaz first came out it was Sonny
Edited on Thu Jun-18-09 09:02 AM by calico1
that was more accepting of it, and Cher who had a hard time with it.
He was a Conservative but I certainly didn't hate him nor was I glad when he got killed. And if he were still alive today I wouldn't wish he had a heart attack either.

10. My memory of Sonny will always be how he voted for DOMA and ...
said on the House floor to his daughter that he just could not bring himself to support her by voting against it.

3. FWIW: Cher's first Oscar nomination was for "Silkwood"; she portrayed a lesbian.

8. Wow, I want to smack the writer of that article
Did they refer to Chaz as "he" ONCE in the thing?

9. Memo to self: Think ahead when naming babies.
Don't get too cute or creative. You may live to regret it.
