How do you come up with a figure like $1.2 million when blackmailing a senator?

I have this image of the Hamptons sitting about their pool, stressed out about some fast approaching balloon payment they gotta handle for their "better nouveau than not riche at all" McMansion, and Doug snaps his fingers and goes, "I've got it! Say, honey, you remember a coupla months back when you were boinking that senator?"

"So?"

"Well, I got a cunning plan. Since he's married and a big ol' Promise Keeper and is preening himself to run for president, I'll bet we could black mail him for some quick cash. Nothing too greedy of course, just a flat mill. That should be enough cash to tide us over until that socialist in the White House fixes Wall Street and we can start making some money off our investments again."

And then Cindy Hampton swizzles her pink umbrella in thought, then she sets down her mai tai, a bit shocked at her husband's words. "A million dollars? Are you insane? We gotta eat, Douglass. Make it $1.2 million and maybe I can finally get me a decent pedicure."

Or maybe there's this convention among extortionists that you have to shake down your marks in 1998 dollars and they were simply adjusting for inflation. If it's something like that, I can totally respect their professionalism.

PS, They've apparently already lawyered up. I'm starting a betting pool for when they file their suit against Ensign for, shit I dunno, sexual harassment and breach of orgasm. My money says they're saving it till October so they don't get swamped by the new fall TV season. John Ensign's gonna be paying for that cooter for a long, long time.
