Anyway, it looks like Ensign didn't have the cash to pay these people off.

Perhaps Ensign offered to help them get jobs, and then failed to follow through. the very fact that he mentioned it, may pique the interest of Las vegas police. If he has an interest in a casino, they are very interested in potential lawbreaking, and Vegas police don't mess around.
This was something that happend to them too...not just ensign. If he did not follow through with a promise he made to them, then maybe they had no obligation to stay quiet about it. they have every right to talk about something in their own lives.

I doubt that either of them have presidential aspirations, so speaking out would not harm them as much. I think Ensign offered them hush money and THEY turned it down and maybe threatened to call the cops on HIM.. Then HE jumped out in front and blew the whistle on himself before they could. Either waym the cops will probably look into it :)

If it can be shown that Ensign was paying hush money to this guy from campaign funds then he could be in real trouble.

simply because it can affect the way a Congressperson votes.

That's the real reason why Larry Craig got into so much trouble--not so much for being involved in that incident in the airport bathroom, but for keeping quiet about the criminal charges that resulted from it.
