"Mr. Political Science Major" strikes again, this time claiming that the left censors books...
By which I mean gets them pulled from libraries. I had posted this on my Facebook update:

The thought police are alive and well in West Bend, Wisconsin: http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2009/06/16/francesca_lia_block/index.html

He responded with "The left does it too. It's called political correctness."

I understand what he's trying to say, although I don't necessarily believe it to be true.

1. Whenever I read about book burnings, I immediately think of Nazis or the Middle Ages--
Something so archaic, like applying leeches for infection or waterboarding a witch or publicly hanging someone.

From the article:
"Now an outfit called the Christian Civil Liberties Union has gotten in on the act, suing the library for, according to the West Bend Daily News, "damaging" the "mental and emotional well-being" of several individuals by displaying "Baby Be-Bop" in the library. Since attempts to label the novel as "pornographic" have failed, the (somewhat shadowy) CCLU hopes to brand it as hate speech, in part because it contains the word "nigger." The complainants, described as "elderly" by the newspaper, claim that Block's novel is "explicitly vulgar, racial and anti-Christian." They want the library's copy not only removed but publicly burned."

5. When I read about book burnings, I think about Drake, North Dakota . . .
In 1973, the Drake school board ordered the high school janitor to burn three dozen copies of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. They had to do it. They declared the book "obscene" and so had no alternative than to burn such a vile affront to their sensibilities.

A degree doesn't save you from being a royal ignoramus. James Dobson is a fucking doctor, for Christ's sake.

9. It's legit...
He has a doctorate in child development from USC. He's also a member of the Radio Hall of Fame, owned and controlled by Clear Channel. Oddly enough, Mike Malloy and Howard Stern are not.

11. A doctorate in child development? That's frightening. I wouldn't let that freak anywhere near
any child I gave a damn about. Actually, I wouldn't let that man near anyone I gave a damn about. I'm sure he's driven more people to therapy than their own parents have.

Gee the Radio Hall of fame is controlled by Clear Channel? Hmmm I wonder why Mike Malloy and Howard Stern (who I don't really much care for truthfully) aren't there.

3. Which books have the left "censored"?
Ask him for specific titles. Has there ever been a liberal effort to have a book banned from a library? I can't recall that ever happening.

4. Well duh...
The right doesn't know the difference between the left and Stalinism or between stopping hate speech and silencing legitimate works because they offend reactionary sensibilities.

7. I think the point he's trying to make...
...is that he thinks the left has suppressed speech under the guise of "political correctness". It's quite a stretch, but I've quickly learned that he'll gladly make the most ridiculous leap in order to give himself a chance to try and prove the mental superiority he believes his political science degree has bestowed upon him.

6. Christian Civil Liberties Union? You've got to be f'in kidding me.
Apparently the only way to protect their civil liberties is by infringing on everyone else's. Those numbnuts wouldn't know what a civil liberty is if it bit them on their uptight asses.

10. Tell him that Glenn Beck, O'Reilly and Hannity aren't poli-sci grads...
I'm sure he masturbates to photos of them. Yet he claims that only poli sci grads know anything about politics.

He should stop watching Fox News then.

13. No.
Not technically, anyway. While they're both statements from the same Facebook discussion thread, I thought the subject matter was so different that it should have its own thread.
