Olive Garden disputes report that ads were pulled from Letterman
A spokesman for the Olive Garden disputed a report from Politico that the restaurant chain pulled its advertising from the David Letterman show due to jokes about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

“Information reported today by Andy Barr of Politico regarding Olive Garden’s advertising on the Late Show with David Letterman was erroneous. No authorized spokesperson for the company confirmed the information in his report,” said Olive Garden spokesman Rich Jeffers in an email to The Vote.

“The Olive Garden media schedule is planned months in advance. The schedule for the Late Show with David Letterman was completed earlier this month. We take all guest concerns seriously. And, as always, we will factor those concerns in as we plan our advertising schedule in the future,” he continued.

Jeffers has not yet responded to an email asking if Olive Garden advertisements will continue on the David Letterman show.

1. Someone just wanted to re-ingite the Olive Garden Wars at DU.
Maybe, with any luck, we can get cigarettes, porn, and breastfeeding in there, too?

I have a life-long habit of double-checking news items. My dad was a newspaperman. He taught me to never believe anything I read.

7. Who? Olive Garden or Politico
Edited on Thu Jun-18-09 02:44 PM by sharp_stick
Personally I don't believe a word I see at Politico, it's pretty much just the RNC dressed up as a news organization to be used because their cover at Faux Noise has been blown.

12. Therein lies the reason not to jump quickly onto bandwagons.
Things are often not what they seem.

As for Politico...everything there is suspect unless confirmed in an independent source. They're feeding the morons. It's what they do best.

22. Actually, it does.
If it's truthful, Olive Garden switched their media buys earlier this month to target another demographic than that of viewers of Letterman.

Media buys are made for many reasons, and they generally have a fixed term. Olive Garden doesn't care who the heck you are, as long as you come in to eat their library paste and cheeZe.

Oh...here have as many breadsticks as you like...made fresh less than two weeks ago and reheated just now in our microwave! Have some more salad!

You'll get all full and won't care if the entree sucks.

21. As one of the first posters of this "news item," I looked for sources other than
Politico (knowing their "credentials"). Maybe I erred in posting it. If so, I am sorry.

On the other hand, even if it is not true, maybe it can be treated like a dress rehearsal for actual actions. It certainly seemed to move very quickly, both the news of the OG ads and the reaction by both sides.

And if it shows that, in some cases, a corp will respond to our pressure as much as the pukes, then it does have value as practice.

And we really do not know what the truth is. Had they made that decision to dump Dave? Did OG change its decision?

Some may note that I have often spoken against these kind of boycotts as being ineffective. Maybe I am wrong about that, as well. Not that I am abandoning "direct" action against individuals, but...

25. I was a first poster as well. I got it from LBN, via Yahoo, via Politico--
It was interesting, however, to find out the extent that Olive Garden's owners (Darden) contribute and support far right Republicans.

26. The Orlando Sentinal explains further
link: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/orl-olive-garden-letterman-061809,0,4670557.story

Olive Garden won't be running advertisements on David Letterman anytime soon, but Orlando-based Darden Restaurants is disputing media reports saying the Italian chain has canceled ads over controversy stemming from an off-color joke about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's teenage daughter.

People angry over Letterman's joke earlier this month have been pressuring advertisers such as Olive Garden to boycott the show.

Darden Restaurants spokesman Rich Jeffers said late Wednesday that Olive Garden had no more ads scheduled to run for the current season and had not made a decision on whether to advertise during the next season starting in September...

Basically, that means that Olive Garden wasn't currently advertising on the Letterman show and their future ad purchases are as yet, to be announced.

Oh, and the Politico is full of shit.
