Pelosi Reiterates Commitment to Strong Public Plan
By Mike Lillis 6/18/09 2:37 PM

From House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) weekly press conference, as reported by Roll Call (subscription):

Pelosi made clear Thursday that some version of the program — “It may not be called ‘public option,’ but it will be a level playing field,” she said — is the price of admission for health care reform in her chamber. “We will have a public option in the House that will be real,” she said. “What’s not real is no use doing.”

The statement is reference to several proposals floating around the Senate that would water down the government-backed plan, either by delaying its arrival with coverage and cost triggers, or by creating a co-op arrangement that would result in smaller patient pools, thereby lessening the buying power (and increasing premiums) of the alternative-coverage option.

9. I wish I could believe they give a damn what we think
over the last few weeks, I see they do not. They know what they are going to do, and there is nothing we can do to make them stop or change. It's just buisiness. You understand.

2. The level playing field means the public option will be private insurance
paid for by the taxpayer. It's already been spelled out. It's the most inefficient way of doing this, but we can't upset the corporate assholes, can we?

5. And I think she's directly disputing Daschle and his half-baked
ideas. This is potentially good news, but no one wants that. You're not getting single payer, but a public option would be worth fighting for, too. imo.

6. aha, so there is a catch
Is that the same thing Obama is pushing for when he demands a public option? Then why would Daschle be against it?

7. It's not written in stone but I've been noticing no one is saying that
the public option would be a beefed up Medicare available for businesses and individuals to buy into in lieu of private insurance, which would be a true public option. Charlie Rangel dropped a hint that a trillion dollars would be invested in a public option so that people can go buy the insurance of their choice. Whhhaat? Back up Charlie. Buying insurance means private insurance, and that still leaves us with the problems we have with health insurance today. It also points to means testing and that portends that a lot of people who fall in the middle will still be uninsured and underinsured. That is not a public option and Nancy and Charlie are not giving any details. I feel they are trying to play a shell game with us.

8. I agree
What you described is not my idea of a public option. More like a public subsidy of private options. I expect better from Rangel though.
