Toyota Extends Frame Rust Coverage to 15 Years (Tacoma 95-00 Models)
Toyota Extends Frame Rust Coverage to 15 Years (95-00 Models)

Not a vehicle recall but we were told they will replace the frame and related parts if the inspection show unacceptable rust---our 2001 Tacoma passed inspection so far.( close enough to the 2000 that the dealer recommended inspection)

http://pressroom.toyota.com/pr/tms/toyota/TYT2008030714...

"March 7, 2008 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A., Inc. will launch a Customer Support Program to extend warranty coverage on certain 1995 through 2000 model year Tacoma truck frames.

Toyota has received reports regarding a small number of Tacoma vehicles exhibiting excessive corrosion of the frame, causing perforation of the metal. The frames of some vehicles may not have adequate corrosion protection. When exposed to severe environmental conditions, including accumulation of road salts, these vehicles may develop corrosion beyond normal surface rust commonly found on metal after years of exposure.

Instances of this condition are isolated and largely confined to states which use salt for winter de-icing of roads. However, to assure customers of its commitment to satisfaction, Toyota is extending a rust perforation warranty covering 1995 to 2000 Tacoma truck frames for a period of 15 years from original sale, with no mileage limitation, for corrosion damage resulting in perforation of the frame material.

Should a customer's vehicle experience this condition, they will be requested to present it to any Toyota dealer for inspection. Upon confirmation of rust perforation, Toyota will, at its option, repair or repurchase the vehicle. If it is determined that no rust perforation is present, the extended warranty will be in effect for 15 years from original sale."

1. They scrapped unknown thousands of them

last year. Last summer several semi loads a day came in to a salvage yard near me, they went straight to the crusher they weren't even permitted to salvage any parts from them. From what I heard if rust was found on them Toyota either fixed it or they would pay 150% of book value plus additional cash if you purchased a new Tacoma. One guy told me he got $14000 for his 1999 Tacoma for trade on a new one. Now that is standing behind your product.

2. Toyota has done this for years,
if they know of a reoccurring problem they would fix the problem for little or no cost to the customer and go beyond the warranty period with a phone call from the owner to Toyota customer relations. They were doing these things as the domestic companies were caught denying claims on known severe, unsafe defects and engineering reoccurring parts failures to garnish their future parts sales. Now the US 3 are all facing BK while Toyota struggles, their car buying base are highly loyal to the brand.

I blame US 3 management and their business plan for their failure, not inability to compete...refusal, with arrogant reliance on US patriotism and disregard for the principals which launched their success.

I sold cars in the 1980s. I worked on a combination Chevrolet/Toyota dealership. In the 3 years I sold there I don't recall anyone coming on the lot looking for a Toyota who ended up buying a Chevrolet, several times per week a Chevrolet shopper would come on and end up buying a Toyota. They did nothing to earn people's loyalty, they lost market share because of it.

3. Last a long time. Stand behind their products. Dammit, it's gonna
be hard for the non-domestic detractors to find fault here.

But, they'll try.

4. Loved and lost my 2000 Tacoma X cab to this problem
but Toyota honored their promise. We'd heard about it before we got the letter from Toyota, so went out to visually inspect our frame. Left frame at rear wheel well cracked almost all the way through.

The truck was really banged up on one side from a daughter mishap, broken windshield, several other major problems that would have prevented it from passing inspection in Vermont, plus it had 160,000 miles on it - but Toyota bought it back from us for $13,000, plus $1000 off a new Toyota.

Fantastic service, treated with respect, no questions asked. Such a sensible way to do business! I love their vehicles, and highly regard the company.

5. Awesome....
...now that is a company that stands behind its product.

I drive Honda only...I don't know if they have ever done anything like this, but I am totally sold on Japanese cars.

:hi:

6. Bought my Toyota pickup new in '93
Unless I win the lotto or the price of a good electric vehicle comes way down, it will very likely be the last four-wheeled vehicle I buy.
