Cronkite's assistant denies CBS newsman is gravely ill

Walter Cronkite's longtime assistant denied reports on Friday night that the retired anchorman of "CBS Evening News" is gravely ill.

Marlene Adler, Cronkite's assistant, said by phone late Friday, "he is aging. He's suffering the challenges of age, but he's not gravely ill. Only God knows when life will end and for Walter, it's not imminent."

Reports of ill health - and Cronkite has been seemingly superhuman for most of his 92 years - surface periodically but those making the rounds of the close-knit TV news industry in recent weeks have been especially grim. CBS News executives even recently began to solicit obituary comments from various leading figures, like Tom Brokaw and Morley Safer, but stopped after Adler and others said they'd hit the alarm button prematurely.

TVNewser, a Web site, reported Thursday that "multiple CBS News sources" said Cronkite was "gravely ill." Bob Schieffer told The Associated Press, "All of us are praying for the best, and our thoughts are with Walter's family," but added that he didn't have any current news on his condition.

Not dead yet.

1. Ok, he's gravely ill, he's not gravely ill, whatever. If someone will just
apologize to Rush Limbaugh we can all move on.

3. I love Walter a lot. But someone in his personal cadre needs to get
their story straight.

5. I just wonder what Rush Limbaugh has to do with it.
What's that about?

6. The humor may have been unsuccessful but in any case I'm not
explaining it.

7. To paraphrase Candidate Obama:
"You're funny enough!"

Actually, I thought it was a pretty good post...I for one, got it.

9. 'Am kicking this to recommend it to others hereabouts and to
suggest to many of the younger folks on DU that you go back and watch some of the footage of Walter Cronkite.

He was steady, professional, entirely qualified, deeply trusted by viewers, and for many years the dignified bearer of unhappy news of what was going on in our country.

There were very few as sharp, as true, and as trusted as Cronkite before Cronkite, and hardly anyone like him now at all.

Find some video clips of his broadcasts and treat yourself to a consumate pro.
