Sick, sick, sick: 1 in 4 South African men admit to rape.

1 in 4 South African men surveyed admit to rape

Associated Press Writer – Fri Jun 19, 3:27 pm ET
CAPE TOWN, South Africa – A leading South African research group said one in four male South Africans it surveyed admitted to committing rape — a finding that cast a harsh light on a culture of sexual violence that victims groups say is deeply embedded in society.

According to police statistics, some 36,000 women were raped in 2007 — nearly 100 per day. But victim support groups and government-backed research say the vast majority of rapes go unreported because of the stigma and trauma involved. South Africa is home to about 50 million people.

The government-funded Medical Research Council, whose findings often influence official policy, said it conducted the survey to deepen understanding of men's attitudes and behavior.

Chief researcher Rachel Jewkes said Friday that the findings were "shocking" but "not unexpected." Opposition political parties said they were horrified, but victim support groups said

Seems like quite a rash assessment on your part.

4. been there and it was fecking nuts, served with a few afrikanners as well
some nice places but the crime was unfreckingbelievable, why dont you think that the rate of rape pretty much concludes that the country has major problems.

5. So you don't think 200+ years of culture destruction
has nothing to do with it?

I grew up in South Africa, and have nothing but respect for the black population - I knew them, they were my friends. The feck up is what was done to them. I can guarantee that very few people could have survived what they did.

11. There is a whole heap more to the story.
I watched a South African teenager who was brought to the States for a better life. Very nice kid - responsible, but not very bright. His parent found him a job - he went there one day, and refused to go back. Eventually, it became apparent that he had enormous feelings of inadequacy, from his experiences in South Africa where he was made to feel inferior. His condition slowly deteriorated, where he began to think that the TV was talking to him. I also observed that he was starting to become more self-sexually stimulating. When it became clear that he was not going to improve, he was sent back to relatives who were shocked at how he had changed.

Yes, people are fucked up - and their nurturing has a whole lot to do with it. Very bright people can overcome it, but those who have low IQs just cannot cope.

So I don't find this surprising in the least.

13. In South Africa or America?
South Africa for some reason has a strong culture of sexual violence which crosses all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Modern frat boy culture also has a strong tinge of sexual violence across all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Is this from South Africa, America, or hold true for both?

23. Based on some responses by DUers in a date rape thread some time ago that doesn't shock me.
There are many DUers that think it's OK to have sex with a woman that is so drunk that she is not "all there" enough to consent. That thread, occurring only a couple days after a friend of mine had been raped, shocked and disgusted me.

15. decades ago there was a poll of American men, "If there were no criminal risk, would you force women
to have sex" A surprising large percentage of men said "yes". I recall the survey not using the word
"rape", but "force to have sex". I think psychologically some men separate 'rape' from 'forced sex' although we know it's the same thing

19. Interesting that they switched terms like that.
It would be interesting to see the difference if the word "rape" had been used instead. I suspect it would still be way too high, but lower than this one was (If I remember correctly it was something like 35% in the poll you're talking about, assuming it's the same one I remember).

And I think you hit the nail on the head with your last line. I know I don't see a difference between them. Unless they're roleplaying, forced is forced is forced.

25. As I recall, one of the points of the survey was the males didn't equate "forced sex" with 'rape'
The term was used on purpose because "Would you rape" got a different response than "would you force someone to have sex"

28. I wonder too
I think maybe some men think that if they demand it in a threatening way or they just overpower a woman but don't hurt her it isn't rape. Women will say no but they may not fight back out of fear of bringing on something worse (like being beaten, getting broken bones, and even fearing for their lives), so men would think her 'no' was just not said seriously.

But using the word 'rape' instead of 'force her' definitely brings up images of violence.

Edited on Sun Jun-21-09 01:35 AM by Odin2005
They elected Zuma not too long after a friend of mine had been raped so I was going off the deep end with thoughts of nuking that country from orbit for obvious reasons.

the guy just didn't give a fuck and simply told Zuma off for chasing young woman as a man of 65.

31. if there is any justice in the world perhaps he contracted HIV from his victim
Zuma first came to international prominence during his rape trial where he testified after having sex (as was his duty as a Zulu warrior) with Ms. Kuzwayo he had a shower to prevent the transmission of HIV, which he knew she (a family friend) was infected with.

The ANC is fucked, when this asshole became leader of the ANC a friend in South Africa sent me a brief message "I guess were going to find out what is worse than apartheid"

34. misplaced solidarity I guess
It is tough enough to get these guys to criticize Robert Mugabe,

The person to watch will be Trevor Manuel - despite being white he is the only person in the ANC with enough clout to possibly lead an internal revolt against Zuma

that in the U.S. That's not a slam against S. Africa. It's a fact.
