In another day of off-message bad news for the Republican presidential hopeful, a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday of New Yorkers statewide showed Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton would trounce him 50 percent to 42 percent in the general election.
Former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards topped the former Gotham mayor 47 percent to 43 percent. And Giuliani would tie Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 44 percent to 44 percent. The poll of 1,548 registered voters had an overall margin of error of 2.5 percent.
The results were no surprise to veteran political observers.
"Sorry, Mayor Giuliani. New York is still a blue state," quipped Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Carroll noted, however, that Giuliani is still competitive with candidates other than Clinton and is favored by red state Republicans.
Observer Alan Chartock pointed to the pre-9/11 reputation of Giuliani, whose administration was widely seen as divisive and autocratic.
