1. Question. Are the cops we keep seeing the Basij, or a regular municipal force, albeit paramilitary?

2. Basiji are usually plainclothes
Here's your armband, here's your club, go have fun, that sort of thing. If you're seeing uniforms and lots of gear it's probably professional police.

5. You can see a lot more of them when the camera pans around
If that many riot police in my town faced off against that many local protestors, it would easily be enough to drive them off.

In Tehran they're probably both stretched thin and highly demoralized at this point. (Also, the crowd seems rather less willing to back down.)

7. That's where stretched thin comes in
I imagine that scenario's happening all over the city.

That, and quite a few of the cops are probably kicking up their heels with an ice pack or two by this point.

10. Damnation, that was awesome! The Iranian 2nd Amendment must be the right to bear rocks.
You can see here the effect of sympathetic mullahs issuing fatwas to the cops not to put down the mobs. It's leaving the forces of oppression way understaffed. Either they break out the guns, rubber bullets, and tear gas, or the people will have their way.
