FDA: Pet chews could be contaminated with salmonella
(CNN) -- Pet owners need to avoid certain pet chews because they could be contaminated with salmonella, the Food and Drug Administration warned Thursday.

The contaminated product -- American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chews and Dog Chews -- was manufactured by T.W. Enterprises of Ferndale, Washington.

Consumers who have purchased the treats should "dispose of them in a safe manner (e.g., in a securely covered trash receptacle)," the FDA said in a written statement.

Thursday's warning comes after the FDA tested packages of three different sizes of beef treats made by T.W. Enterprises and found salmonella in one of them.

Salmonella can cause infections in dogs, cats and people, and the bacteria can be transferred to people who handle the treats, especially if they do not wash their hands after handling the product, the FDA said.

Jeez, when is this gonna end. Are we going to have to be suspect of every freakin thing we feed to our pets? I can't remember a time over the last 10 years when this country has had so many food problems. Most of the recalls have happened during Bush's occupation of the WH. I have to wonder what with all the other crimes his admin. has perpetrated, will this be one more that will track back to him because of his loosening of our protection laws?

1. Damn! One of my dogs threw up this morning and
off I was, yet again, to check the recall lists. I've taken my dogs off dry Iams and put them on dry Purina which is not on any list. I do give them beef jerkey treats and that's what got me nervous this morning. Why does it seem that everything, just about EVERYTHING is falling apart in this country! Don't tell me, I know the answer to that question!

2. Is dry Iams on the list? I thought they were made with something
other than wheat gluten (corn gluten?). I guess I'd better check my bag of food. I'm thinking its time to start making my own dog food. This is unreal. There are lots of places where you can find recipes for pet food. Not TOO expensive and easy to make.

4. No, dry Iams is OK ,I think ,but I got nervous so I dropped it.
Sorry if I panicked you! I do a good enough job panicking myself! I am going to have to find a dry dogfood recipe. I spend more on food for my pets than I do on food for myself.

7. Thanks. I looked at my bag of dog food and it doesn't even
have corn gluten. In fact, the Iams website says that their food is made by P&G not Menu Foods. However, I totally understand why you would change foods with the number of foods that have been recalled.

So we're safe, but I'm still thinking making my own food is the way to go. I'd been thinking of switching to human grade dog food anyway and that would be expensive. Cheaper to make your own. And my dogs like anything I make (no matter how bad it is!) better than their own food.

8. I feed my boy Sheridan, Nature's Recipe dry dog food
It's made by Del-Monte Pet Products and has no corn, no wheat, and no beef in it. He has skin allergies and these three things(so says my Vet) are the biggest culprits.

So I haven't been too worry, but I continue to watch every news item that comes out about this.

3. I wondered why my two little dogs have been throwing up after dog treats.
Now I think I know the answer.
Throwing all of it out now.

5. In a way this is good
I shows that the FDA is now being pushed by negative publicity into closer scrutiny of pet foods. I know it sounds scary to keep hearing this stuff but until Menu recalled its food almost never did we hear anything...

6. K&R to get the word out on yet another danger. No oversight of any corp is the problem.

9. Yea, I know. WTF is going on? I guess I better start testing
the food on myself first before giving it to my pets.

10. It does make you feel that way
doesn't it.

My boy, Sheridan depends on me to right by him and make the correct choices. I mean it's not like he can buy the food himself.

Not yet anyway! :)
