Donald Rumsfeld in Repose

By Brad Graham

.... In fact, Rumsfeld has continued to relish his image as a no-nonsense reformer. Coming across a description of himself as someone who dragged the Defense Department into the twenty-first century "with no bedside manner," Rumsfeld said he liked the phrase, joking that it would make a good title for a book. ....

Rumsfeld has ascribed much of the negative perception of him and the Bush administration to distorted media coverage. "The intellectual dishonesty on the part of the press is serious," he asserted. He groused about "a strong incentive to be negative and dramatic" that had infused much of the coverage. "It's a formula that works. It gets Pulitzers; it gets promotions; it gets name identification on the front page above the fold."

Part of the formula, Rumsfeld added, involved pillorying him along with Bush and Cheney but sparing Powell and Rice. As an example, he noted accusations that Bush and Cheney had lied about Saddam Hussein's possession of weapons of mass destruction in making the case for the invasion of Iraq. "They never say Colin Powell lied," Rumsfeld asserted. "They don't say Condi lied." ....

Some associates who served with Rumsfeld during both his stints as defense secretary think he changed over the years. "I refer to him as Don One and Don Two," said James Roche, who was a Navy officer doing strategic planning under the first Don and secretary of the Army under the second. "Don One was a leader, Don Two was a bureaucrat. Don Two was worried about what the White House was doing, what Condi was doing, what Colin was doing."

Ken Adelman, who greatly admired the earlier Rumsfeld but grew increasingly disillusioned with him during the Bush years, wonders whether Rumsfeld fundamentally changed or just appeared different to him. "Maybe he was better before, or maybe I was just wrong about him," Adelman said. "Maybe it's the challenges that were different later. I don't know." ....

The above is excerpted from Graham's book By His Own Rules: The Story of Donald Rumsfeld.

1. Rummy, if we're kinda tough on ya, son, it's cuz we love ya.
Well, that's not entirely true.

Actually it isn't true at all.

We're tough on ya cuz you're an remorseless and amoral vampire with your fangs sunk deep into the flesh of angels.

3. Rummy makes it easy. What a loathsome maggot he is. Or was.
Or whatever.

Questioned about the looting of the Iraqi National Museum while troops aplenty were dispatched to protect the oil fields, Rummy gave us his famous "Stuff happens" response.

I am still shivering from that response. Never liked the guy much to start with and liked him a lot less after that remark.

6. Hell, I'm in therapy for hearing 8 years of shit like that from Bushco.
I genuinely think I have a mild form of PTSD from it.

7. I don't blame you one bit. We're all in a kind of numbed state from
how bad the Bush years were.

It reached a point fairly early on when just the sound of his voice on a car radio would prompt me to lunge at the dashboard to change the station. I couldn't abide his whiney, self-important, narrow words. Most of the rest of us, from grade school on up, try to live in the real world, try to do better tomorrow than we did yesterday, and generally aspire to be reasonably decent citizens.

I think my deep distrust of George W. Bush comes from feeling that he never made any such effort.

4. Rumsfeld is one of the most despicable players to emerge...
from the bush admin, maybe even the most vile of all the cabal. His gray, greasy hair, his yellow pointed teeth and his beady little eyes, reminded me of a crotchety, aging rodent.

5. He's Out Shilling This Tripe On CSPIN
This Graham dude is trying to do a whitewash...claims that von Rumsfeldt wasn't a neo-con. BULLSHIT. It's as if he was a victim of circumstances. BULLSHIT.

The saving grace of all this "rehabilitation" is it doesn't refute the facts, only tries to blow bullshit over them. It keeps the issues about war crimes and the criminals who did it alive. The ultimate story about the past 8 years will be written in the World Court...not some right wing stenographer.

and rehabilitate themselves. I say give rummy and cheney all the paper and pens they want, and let them pass the time at The Hague writing their memoirs.

Of course, they could just give bush* a box of crayons and a coloring book to keep him occupied for the next thirty years.
