http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,526490,00.html

yea, yea I know its Fox, but I found it through a link on another site.

Perhaps they are onto something? I am all for freedom of religion but I am not in favor of dangerous cults.

1. it's france. what do u expect?
they ban everything. all kinds of speech laws, etc.

regardless.

the issue isn't whether you are in FAVOR of dangerous cults.

the issue is should the govt. have the authority to BAN them.

i'm not in FAVOR of fat people wearing spandex in public.

i'm not about to let the govt. have the authority to ban that.

people shouldn't oppose govt. power expansions merely because they sympathize with the victims of the power grab.

if that were true, civil rights would be meaningless.

another example. i am not in favor of the nazis. nor are the ACLU. however, the ACLU defended their right to march. why? because one can be in favor of protection of civil rights for a group w/o favoring that group

11. the question becomes
to what extent is the govt. responsible in protecting people from being "taken advantage" of.

iow, the longstanding "caveat emptor" applies.

also note that NUMEROUS adherents to scientology pimp it incessantly and think (rightly or wrongly) that it's been immensely successful for them.

so, it's a bit more complex.

compare to your basic bunco fraud artist. you won't find ANYBODY that thinks the fraudster helped them.

you can find LOTS of people that think scientology helped them.

and lots that are dissatisfied.

to what extent should govt. power step in and prevent individuals the CHOICE of joining scientology or not.

i don't approve of scientology. it does not follow that i think govt. should have the authority to ban them pimping their "religion"

huge difference

7. You seeing fat people in spandex never killed anyone.
Scientology, however, claims lives.

Since the Revolution there has been a strong anti-cleric faction in France, as they do not want any interference from religious groups in their government.

We could learn a few things from them on that.

8. "seeing fat people in spandex never killed anyone". Speak for yourself.
I lived in Hawaii for almost twenty years, and went to the beach at the least, once a week, at the most, every day - and they had TONS of "fat" people in spandex speedos - when I moved to Vegas, I had to have CATARACT surgery.

I rest my case...

9. You proved my point.
You weren't killed, just maimed.

Count your blessings.

6. France isn't the US, and that's ok
I happen to agree with a lot that they do in France, but they are not the US and we really can't judge them by our constitution. They are a democracy, they can work it out.

10. So does Germany, or tried to...
...expose them, but don't ban them...and here we can do our job by keeping John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Kirstie Alley and "Dharma" from ever working and donating money to this cult.
