If we did have single payer ?

Not that I believe that is going to happen. Where then is all the research done if not by the drug companies ? Is there research for new products in Canada or England with their systems? France maybe, I don't know.

spend more money on marketing than on research. Instead of plundering Americans for the costs of their existant drugs, which they charge just a fraction for in every other country, maybe they can start devoting more dollars to actual new research for orphan diseases, etc.

I wouldn't worry about them. They will still make a gazillion dollars even if Americans start paying reasonable as opposed to exhorbitant prices for their drugs.

often under grants by cancer society, gummint etc. My understanding is that pharmas are not the big player in the world of research.
That is what I have understood for a long time.
