Something very fishy about the Governor's "hike" on the trail.
If they know where he is, then someone must have contacted him? Probably by cellphone or Blackberry? Surely he would realize the controversy and concern if he talked to someone? Yet, he calls no one - not even his wife? Something does not add up.

Speculation abounds about what he is doing and if he is truly on the Appalachian Trail? It sounds like the Governor has serious problems that we do not know about? Either he is on an alcoholic binge and is hidden away? Or he is with someone else, not his wife, on a secret getaway? Or he has some serious medical condition that he is trying to keep concealed? If he were simply hiking on a trail, he would find a way to alleviate the concerns of family and friends. Something very suspicious going on here.

1. His hiding something. If it was true that no one knew where he was,
he would be found. His cover is blown.

US governors don't "go missing", they have secret service protection at all times. He's in a mental health facility somewhere, with his handlers desperately hoping the doctors can make him presentable to the public soon.

9. I don't think they have Secret Service protection........
In Missouri, the State Hiway Patrol is tasked to provide the security needs for the Governor. Maybe a similar, taxpayer-funded state agency in South Carolina does this for their Governor.

16. IF he was really, truly missing, the SBI and FBI would be out finding
a missing governor in an instant. Someone on his staff knows where he is, and isn't being honest. He is hiding something or from something.

12. In NH state police are the Secret Service analog for the gov.
I'm pretty sure that's the norm through the country.

And yes, if he's 'hiking' the Trail, I'm Queen of the May.

35. Well, it's been confirmed. I'm definitely not Queen of the May.
Jebus, I've been horny, but never so horny as to loose my freakin' mind.

1. Left his post for days without leaving anyone in charge.

2. Lied like a cheap rug.

3. Either had his staff lie for him or lied to them.

4. Used public property and perhaps public funds to go to another country just rip one off.

5. Bamboozled his wife and publicly humiliated her.

6. Treated his children like crap.

A classic oxymoron: Republican morals.

26. I know scores of authors because of what I do
They do stuff like check into a hotel and disable their Internet access while on deadline, not ditch their security detail. Their families know where they are. Period. One of my girlfriends (a multi-published author,) goes to the family beach house on the Cape. They don't disappear because they have to "write something".

This guy thinks he's going to get away with whatever he's doing. Then again, Gov. Sanford never struck me as especially smart. The media will discover exactly what he's trying to hide. His little publicity stunt will blow up in his face.

So says the article I linked to one post up. I say he never got near the AT. We'll know soon enough. There's no way they can keep his true whereabouts under wraps much longer.

10. Yeah, that cell phone/Blackberry thing caught my attention.
Overnighting on the Appalachian Trail is not something you do without serious preparation, including a way to contact in case of emergencies. Emergencies are the default on the Trail; it's not a garden path.

Further, speaking of emergencies, wouldn't there be legalities about a governor staying in communications with the state and federal government? S/he, among other things, is the commander of the National Guard and this is hurricane season.

This fish is going on to three days dead.

18. Total Bullshit
It is ridiculously obvious that the Governors spokespeople are hiding something serious about the Governor.

The main reason that the explanation given for the Gov's abscence is highly suspicious is that one would think that the Governor of a state would travel the trail with satellite phone or a cell phone at the least.

23. My guess is detox. Normal inpatient time is one week but phone calls are limited.
What governor would be so irresponsible as to disappear for a week, leaving behind all the furor and
uncertainty, unless it was a secret medical issue, such as drying out?
I mean, fine, go ahead and hike the in the woods. Give orders not to be bothered.
at let the Lt. Governor have autority to handle business in your place.
At least people would know where you are, and why would hiking be such a big secret?
If you want to be stupid enought to hike all by yourself for a week so no one could find you if you broke your ankle or anything, fine.

32. That would be my guess also...
The guy has a severe problem with alcohol. He has that alcohol "flush" on his face sometimes - and his mouth has that subtle distortion that you might see with alcoholics when they talk. If you look closely...
