For himself, first of all. But I suspect his tears were for the end of the affair, for not being able to see Maria anymore.

than losing the respect of his wife and sons. It was only when he got to talking about his buds that he started crying.

4. Nah, for his lost dreams, realization moving any further up is not gonna happen, he's blown his wad.
This was the Mother of All Mid-Life Crisis. He is using romantic images and melodrama to hide from facing that he isn't the young buck with a golden future at this point in his life.

Oh, and his sons probably hate him.
