Dear Friends, For the second time in three nights, millions of viewers watching "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" on MSNBC watched Republican Cynthia Davis (R-O'Fallon), Chair of the Special Committee on Children and Families, being named as the "Worst Person in the World." This label was brought on by Davis' awful comments harshly criticizing the state for providing free meals to hungry Missouri children. She stated that child hunger "can be a motivator" as the basis for her argument against school meals for low income children. Davis has defended and reinforced those comments in the past few days. House Democrats strongly believe that it is highly inappropriate for a lawmaker who callously believes that Missouri children should go hungry to lead the House committee with jurisdiction over issues related to children and families. That is why, today I have requested that Republican Speaker Ron Richard remove Representative Davis from her chairmanship, a post to which he appointed her. House Democrats believe that this action would show that the Missouri House puts the welfare of our children first. Allowing Rep. Davis to continue to chair the Special Committee on Children and Families would amount to an endorsement of her offensive views by the Speaker and the House Republican Caucus. It is my hope that Speaker Richard will see the wisdom of our request to move Missouri forward. We will continue our efforts to fight for the one out of every five children in Missouri go to bed hungry each night. We ask that the Republicans join us. Sincerely,
Paul LeVota
