Thanks to Farrah Fawcett for her creative stand against domestic violence
Edited on Fri Jun-26-09 02:52 AM by Ken Burch
Ms. Fawcett's work in "Extremities" and "The Burning Bed" helped force this country to take a real look at the pain, fear, and violence that women and children live with on a daily basis in this country. Showing tremendous and unexpected range as an actress, Ms. Fawcett used her celebrity to stand up, directly, for a large group of powerless victims, taking their suffering to a mainstream audience that otherwise might never have had to face up to that particular reality.

On this day, we should all remember and thank Farrah Fawcett for her decision to take on those roles.

1. Kick! She did America a public service with those pieces.
Brought battery as an issue to the front of the national stage in a very dramatic fashion. And got herself taken a lot more seriously as an actress. She wasn't just another pretty face.

2. She absolutely did a tremendous job on those as well. . .
and certainly brought those issues to the forefront at a time when Americans needed to pay more attention to them.

I think her performances showed that she had often been an underrated actress.

3. IMHO 'The Burning Bed' and 'There's Something About Amelia' were catalysts
Both those TV movies did a lot to change the dialog on spousal abuse and child sex abuse. I remember going out and buying the book after I saw The Burning Bed. I came from an abusive family background and it was one of the things that set me on a path to healing and avoiding abusive relationships. (Not that I didn't experience a few, but I think a less-examined life would have been much worse.)

4. She did a fine job in both movies, but I remember the real Francine Hughes..
having "the" impact in changing the domestic violence laws.
