Governor (Sanford) Used State’s Money to Visit Lover
Source: NYT

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina acknowledged Thursday that he visited his mistress in Argentina on a taxpayer-financed trade mission to South America early last summer, an admission adding another layer to a scandal that produced increasing calls for his resignation.

“While the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip,” Mr. Sanford said in an e-mail statement issued by his office, “I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with.”

Mr. Sanford called questions about the trip to Argentina “very legitimate” and said he would reimburse its costs. Documents provided by the South Carolina Department of Commerce suggested that they totaled at least $12,000.

Coming one day after Mr. Sanford confessed that he had spent his week’s absence from the state in Argentina with the woman with whom he had been having a year-old affair, Thursday’s admission was yet another blow to his reputation and led several fellow South Carolina Republican leaders to say he could no longer serve as governor.

“I think he’s gone, it’s over,” said one of them, Harvey S. Peeler Jr., majority leader of the State Senate. “Leaving aside his personal life, when you use taxpayer dollars, that’s what Republicans are all about — spending tax dollars wisely. This was not spending tax dollars wisely.”

1. I know cable news pundits are jumping backwards through their assholes
trying to rationalize all the shit that this clown pulled and turn the whole CF around in order to praise him for his courage and honesty in coming forward to admit the whole thing.

But they can't justify the outright theft of public funds. Not only does this rat faced bastard have to go, he should be in fucking jail.

2. Not possible. I learned from DU that we should empathize with him, since he's in love.

4. "that’s what Republicans are all about"
No, they only do that when it comes to anyone outside of their party. When it's someone inside their party, they don't care how it's spent.

6. The Next Shoe...The Question That I Haven't Heard Asked...
By Sanford's admission (as though we can trust it???), he flew to BA to tango with his Argentinian bombshell, but did he also arrange for her to travel here to meet him?

So we're supposed to take Sanford's word about his affair and "move on"? Actually, fine with me as this cad's national future is shot, but for the people of South Carolina, it's their dimes that appeared to be tied into this love nest. I suspect the digging is really starting on Sanford...i suspect he'll regret he just didn't stay in Buenos Aires.

7. I'm guessing things are on the tense side at home with the Governor
and likely his office, too.

9. I noticed his wife had enough self-respect
not to stand by his side like some sort of prop while he 'fessed up to being caught.

I hope she takes his sorry ass for every dime, we'll see what his Argentinian floozy thinks of him then.

10. I noticed her absence, too, and applaud it. She's likely weary of the
media circus of being a governor's wife and the wife of a presidential aspirant.

More power to her.

8. If the trip was "very legitimate," Senator
there would be no NEED for you to reimburse its costs!
