Fox News gets okay to misinform public, court ruling. No really.
Through the looking glass moment?

The attorneys for Fox, owned by media baron Rupert Murdock, successfully argued the First Amendment gives broadcasters the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on the public airwaves. We are pushing for a consumer protection solution that labels news content according to its adherence to ethical journalism standards that have been codified by the Society of Professional Journalists (Ethics: spj.org).
A News Quality Rating System and Content Labeling approach, follows a tradition of consumer protection product labeling, that is very familiar to Americans. The ratings are anti-censorship and can benefit consumers.

2. Yup. . Way back in 2003:
Appellate Court Rules Media Can Legally Lie.
By Mike Gaddy. Published Feb. 28, 2003
On February 14, a Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization. The court reversed the $425,000 jury verdict in favor of journalist Jane Akre who charged she was pressured by Fox Television management and lawyers to air what she knew and documented to be false information. The ruling basically declares it is technically not against any law, rule, or regulation to deliberately lie or distort the news on a television broadcast.

13. It's a shame those who use public airways to perpetuate lies and propaganda don't have to have
their license renewed periodically and thereby, have to demonstrate they are acting in the public interest rather than maybe acting principally in the 'pukes' interest. :P

14. I like that idea.
It's too bad the powers that be have given up any pretense of a connection between public airwaves and public interest.

16. The cable netwroks are not, I believe, technically broadcast so they
would not be under the FCC rules of conduct.

8. Actually, the shit on The Onion is MUCH closer to reality than anything you get from FOX.
I'm not kidding! They may be making fun of stuff, but it is a very real example of what's going on. Take the iWheel parody on Mac - the laptop with the iPod wheel instead of a keyboard. One guy says, "I'll buy pretty much anything as long as it is shiny and has an Apple logo on it." That's so close to reality it is frightening. And the one about Sony's "fucking piece of shit that doesn't fucking work." That totally pegged the new product hype and the morons who buy something just because it has "way more gigabytes" and shit like that.

FOX is just propaganda. It doesn't even come close to reality. At least The Onion is on target.

4. They should have a big disclaimer across the bottom of the screen
same way advertising is required to say "dramatization"
or "stunt driver on closed course"
or "don't try this at home"
or "may cause explosive diaherria"

5. I bet the other news organizations are doing a fair amount of this too
They'll see it as a green light to do it openly, now.

But, it's a good thing to relate to people when you're talking about how misinformed faux viewers are.

10. The Fairness Doctrine used to help somewhat with that, since one sometimes saw a minute or so of
an opposing view -- into which an actual fact might creep

11. LOL! I dug this up a day or two ago for another thread.
I thought it was SCOTUS (what can I say, the big stuff sticks but the details can become confused) and had to dig it up. Kind of takes the authority out of the link request, huh?

Funny how this stuff comes in cycles, we are constantly reminded just how much of what we "know" is false, but still we cling to it.

12. It's only a state appeals court ruling, though
Maybe it's time to draft legislation on the Federal level that prevents shit like this from continuing to go on.

15. And Other Networks Don't Misinform??
These days, very few of the networks do true News. Most of what's on the cables is opinion with a little bit of information. The real news is now out on the Internet...be it blogged or Twitted. Friday was a classic example...I first found out about MJ's heart attack by checking LBN here and then going to Buzzflash and watched the links there. They were already full while the cables were warming up their minicams and helicopters. By the time they got onto the story, TMZ and News websites were driving the real news, the cables were just along for the ride...and have been ever since. News? Hardly.

Yes...the First Ammendment provides the framework that allows a Faux to live in its parallel universe, and those who chose to watch it do so willingly. There's really little deception here. It's up to the viewer, the consumer to know that the term "news" is better defined "spin"...people now tune into the news and talk that spins it the way they like it.
