Obama to Unveil Housing Plan for Vets

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama on Friday said he would unveil a housing program for veterans aimed at keeping them off the streets when their service is completed.

The Illinois senator told The Associated Press he would introduce legislation Monday that he calls Homes for Heroes. The plan would establish grant and voucher programs to encourage development of affordable housing targeted for veterans.

"Veterans are far more likely to be homeless than non-veterans and part of it is because we're not providing services to them as they transition out of the service," Obama said in an interview before a campaign rally. "Part of it is because there is just not enough affordable housing."

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates as many as 200,000 are living on the streets or in shelters and perhaps twice as many are homeless at some in the course of a year.<snip>

What about vets with less than honorable discharges, would they qualify for Obama's free housing?

Sounds to me like...any homeless Vet will have a place to live. Why should it matter how LONG they served? They are still a VETERAN. We'll see when he introduces it on Monday.

I'm so farkin' sick of the private sector. Pardon my cynicism, but I can't help but read this as yet another (unintended?) government give-away for corporations who'll benefit far more than the vets ever will. I hope to be proven wrong, but I'm not optimistic about this, however "wonderful" it sounds.

One of the reasons I love Obama.

Twenty years ago, I wouldn't have "imagined" that homelessness would not only still be an issue, but would have grown!

Nothing will change until liberals decide it's important.

When Clinton was president, many people were lifted out of poverty. Give the Dems time to take back the Government...Congress AND the WH, and things will improve for ALL the Homeless. Why are you ragging on the DEMOCRATS for the Homelessness? The repukes have been in control of the House for 12 freakin' years, the Senate since 2002 and the WH since Clinton left in 2000. The repukes are who you should be pissed at. At least Obama is trying to do SOMETHING for the soldiers who have been neglected by our VA system. Why begrudge them that? That's just sad. IMCPO.
