6. I'll see your Scott Simon and raise you an Amy Goodman
I quite literally cannot stand the sound of the woman's voice. She appears to be deliberately lowering her pitch to the point at which she sounds rather groggy.

10. Amy Goodman seems much more aware than Scott Simon, for one thing.

17. That depends on what she is supposed to be, and I'm not clear on that.
Is she a news reporter or is she an opinion columnist, is she both? If she is both, then I would prefer that she make it more clear when she is delivering the news and when she is giving opinion. If she is simply doing the news, which is what I take her show on WMNF (community radio) to be, then she has blurred the two jobs.

7. I really like Scott Simon
For I guess more vacuous reasons, he's a Cubs fan and from Chicago. More importantly, I like how he covers a range of topics and gets involved in the story, not just reporting or interviewing. Maybe it's his calm voice on a Saturday morning.

Different strokes.

12. Different strokes indeed. He mounted a vigorous defense of referring
to Darth as "Vice-President Cheney" when a listener objected. He got really HUFFY about the title being retained after the person leaves office, and I figured he was on such a high horse about it that I didn't bother to tell him this means you SPEAK to the person as Mr. Vice President, but in the third person (i.e. news stories) he would be called "former Vice-President."

I feel Simon would run nothing but sports stories if given his choice -- and sports bore me to tears and beyond. Different strokes. As some BritWit said, "Do Unto Others" doesn't work -- I found out how few people like having mustard stirred into their coffee.

18. I thought the protocol was that you refer to a former Prez or VP by their next highest title.
George W Bush would be "Governor Bush" and Cheney would therefore be "Black Bag Cheney" or something like that.

23. You may well be right! This is more refined protocol than I possess.
I know when you say "The Vice-President of the United States" you should be referring to the person presently in the office, not the one (or several) before -- thus leaving listeners guessing who the hell you're talking about.

I would love to hear SS talk about Black-Bag Cheney. So many possible names, there, so difficult to choose, yanno?

31. Back when I was in grade school in the early 70s
we were taught that you always refer to a former President as President, no matter how long ago he served. We were also taught that the word president is always capitalized when referring to the US's chief executive.

21. Referring to Cheney
as anything but "that evil bastard" in unconscionable in my book. I see your point about the "former VP" title but nah, I don't think Simon would do all sports stories. He subbed on BBC America last week, and I thought it was, well different, to hear and see him anchor. And, just to be clear, I'm no "celebrity" worshipper or groupie.

Mustard in coffee? :puke:

9. So you also noted the prominent mention of Clinton and Edwards,
while nary a frigging whisper about Ensign or Craig or some of the other "Family Values" adulterers/pedophiles?

I've found Scott Simon to be intellectually lacking and/or vapid many, many times before, but this morning is the first time he made me really angry.

Apparently the corporate sponsorships are working their magic of the marketplace, free enterprise and all that. My $10 per month sponsorship has no voice. Maybe DemocracyNow can make better use of those bucks.

SS is a sanctimonious weenie.

Anyone remember how weird he looked when he was on TV?

Never mind, I'd look weird on TV, too.

26. I turned the radio off. Suddenly the sound of his voice
was like pouring hot water on a burn.

Equating Clinton's modest office dalliance with Sanford's taxpayer-funded global whoring just did me in.

Sensitive old lady got the vapors and needed quiet. Pull the drapes, would you please dear. And a small glass of brandy would be nice.
