Good Friday

For Christians - Protestants and Roman Catholics - today is Good Friday, the day their Messiah was betrayed, beaten, tortured, and agonizingly killed. I've never been able to understand calling this day "Good Friday." I'm sure there is a sound theological reason but, if you know what it is, please don't send me an email with the explanation. The whole enterprise - the crucifixion, the burial, the resurrection - has as much meaning to me as some of the more phenomenological myths from Greek, Roman, Sumerian, Jewish and Hindu stories of death conquered, redemption granted, God triumphant. I mean no disrespect.

And, the Jewish Passover is another story I find wildly bizarre: An angel of death sent from G-d to indiscriminately murder Egyptian babies, toddlers, and teenagers because Pharaoh would not free the Jews. All the households of Egypt - save those with splashes of lamb's blood over the entranceways - condemned to anguish and suffering on a monumental scale in order to satisfy the vanity of an obviously (to me) insane G-d.

No, thanks. I'll pass on all that. I find my particular brand of atheism comfortable and devoid of the horrors of a slow death on a cross or the choking of life from a newborn.

Anyway, to the folks who harbor those beliefs, season's greetings. I hope you were renewed in your Seders and will be in your Easter Sunday gatherings. To the Wiccans, Celts, and practitioners of the Olde Religion, The Craft, or whatever it is now named, I also salute you. The belief in the Earth as an organism, Gaia, our home everlasting, and the celebrations of re-birth seem particularly necessary - and almost poignant - now as our home is being devoured, burned alive, by the byproducts of greed, lust, and envy.

Sigh . . .

Well, at least the Christian kids - and the anonymous sons and daughters of the agnostics and the atheists - can have a bit of fun with the chocolate bunnies, the brightly colored hens' eggs, and the marshmallow peeps.

There are some people who say they're "dog people" vs. "cat people", but I love all animals. Most people love all animals. How could we not? I remember an old Joyce Brothers PSA where she said "Pets don't care if you look awful" - ain't it true? Nothing more reassuring when you're sick than a warm furry body (besides your spouse's).

space, it's really not practical right now. One can't understand unconditional love unless they've had a pet.

Mr. Catnapper and I have a special fondness for corgis. We go to the UK a lot and see them in the parks. They have an attitude that we find endearing. But right now we're both working, and we each have long commutes. The felines are self-sufficient (I'm sure they heave a collective sigh of relief when we're gone), and we can go away for a few days and the kitties couldn't care less. But ideally, I'd have 450 dogs and 3,000,000 cats.

Maybe we'll win the lottery!

Aren't animals magnificent? Doris Day once said she truly believed animals were here to teach us. Do people now know who she is? She's always been a stoic animal advocate, and she's always walked the walk. And she was great in "The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)". Anyway, you're right, Doris.

When I was about 5 or 6, our dog Sammy had to be put down. To avoid upsetting me, my parents told me that he went to live on Doris Day's dog farm. I wrote a bunch of letters to him (I wasn't a bright child)and gave them to my mom to mail.

My parents moved to NC when my mom's company relocated. They lived on the first floor of an apartment complex that had a small lake in the back. My dad would buy loaves of day-old bread to feed the ducks. One time dad saw a Canadian Goose with fishing line tangled tightly around his leg (dad didn't like the geese much because they'd bully the ducks for food) he caught the goose, brought him into the apartment got the fishing line off and cleaned the wound. He called a vet to see if there was anything else he could do. The vet told him that he did everything he could, the goose would most likely loose the leg - but he saved his life. After my dad passed away, I went down for a visit and met his one-legged goose.

Mine are begging for food for the 19th time today.

This morning, while I was trying to get ready for work, my little mini-Torquemadas kept dashing between my feet trying to let me know they wanted food. Oh, there was SOME food, but not the food they wanted. I would yell at them good-naturedly, and they knew I didn't mean it. Little con artists. I adore them.

Sam's move to mornings was great for me too. I'm still depressed over the demise of Morning Sedition. I was unemployed, but I'd get up at 6am just to listen to Marc and the gang. I was pissed when they dumped Unfiltered and replaced it with Jerry Springer's show - listening to that nonsense was like having a non-surgical lobotomy.
