Finally saw Jesus Camp tonight...horrifying. My wife and I are terrified
Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 09:40 PM by NRaleighLiberal
of what the religious nutcakes on the right are doing to our country. The brainwashing that is being done to turn children into delusional tools of the ultraright is so hypocritically sinful....and they appear to be potentially insiduous, with things only getting worse as the fear card drives the weak further and further in that direction.

We rented it on Netflix - just became available. And, yes, Pastor Ted was featured (if that's what you want to call his very scary appearance).

2. (haven't seen the movie yet, but from what i know and clips i have
seen)

it looks like child abuse--emotional abuse of children.

(i thought there was a law against child abuse)

4. Well, Methman TED has been 'cured' so perhaps he will be soon
back in the saddle....so to speak. He was featured in that film, yes?

5. Scary, isn't it?
It's a cult, nothing less. Those people in "Borat" were the same way.

It is people like this that worry me quite a bit.

7. The blonde boy...
The one who was HONEST and how he was scorned--made me sooo angry.

I'd like to be locked in that props closet for five minutes with "Pastor Becky" and a baseball bat. What she's doing is child abuse, plain and simple.

15. Hi, Maddy. What did you think about the part of the film where Becky
What's-Her-Name said the suicide bombers of Islam are under intense mind-control, so "we" have to be just as intense, and said that was the rationale for the Jesus Camp.

That part really bothered me.

16. Yeah, and she must drill that into the kids. Remember near the end of the movie...
where Rachael says she wants to be a martyr because "Martyrs are cool!" and then she chants "Martyr! Martyr! Martyr!."

Yeah, it's disgusting alright.

18. Yes. I'm kinda hoping their funding dries up. But I'm afraid it
won't.

There are a lot of Beckys out there, just waiting to throw another fundie vote in for the GOP. We're up against people like that in a lot of states.

We have to find a way to outnumber or outmaneuver them.

8. Hi, NRaleighLiberal. I hear you all the way on JESUS CAMP. It's
horrifying to think these people are actually out there on the nation's roads.

The woman who ran it has suspended the camp for the time being -- evidently over bad publicity regarding Ted Haggard's homosexual assignations.

I'm not exactly sure why that's the case, unless some of the funding was being channeled through Haggard's church in Colorado Springs? I have no idea. But it's suspended for now. I'm sure she wants to crank it back up again, though, as soon as the fuss dies down.

Frightening woman, frightening concentration-like atmosphere. Why would they have someone come in there with little teensy fetus models and bellow about abortion? Some of those kids don't even know what abortion is. The older ones maybe. But not the really young folks. That was WAY off base, I thought.

20. without abortion to get 'em raging
They'd have to concern themselves with boring stuff, like Christian charity toward the poor.

10. Maybe some of them will gain normality as they get older.
Unless they're home schooled and kept secluded, they will be exposed to normal people more and more as time goes by. They may "put away childish things".

Bear in mind, they're an extremist group and arenot in the majority. We'll always have the lunatic fringe.

13. Ever see Marjoe?
It's a really old movie from the 70's about (and starring) Marjoe Gortner, who was a child tent-show evangelist. He rejected it all when he became an adult, and made one last round of the revival show circuit with the cameras to document how it was all done. A truly courageous and noble effort on his part to expose the religious carnival scene.

Oh, and I saw Jesus Camp too. Our local progressive book club showed it. There was a pretty dynamic discussion afterward. Several people who had experienced the Pentecostal movement as children were in attendance and spoke out. It was quite a night.

17. I remember Marjoe. I wonder if that movie is still available.
He gave it a heck of a job to make up for his years doing that stuff. Was Marjoe the name of the movie?

14. It's the bush-youth training school.
Make no mistake, this is on a par with any other terrorist basic in the world.
We'll have to monitor these kids their whole lives as a precaution.

19. My son and I watched it tonight too
(Gotta love Netflix)

Most powerful line: "You're raising Christian soldiers for the Republican Party." To which the Jesus Camp leader said, disingenuously, Who us? preach politics? Oh no, not us.
