Mysterious Tremors Detected on San Andreas Fault
Source: AP

LOS ANGELES – Scientists have detected a spike in underground rumblings on a section of California's San Andreas Fault that produced a magnitude-7.8 earthquake in 1857.

What these mysterious vibrations say about future earthquakes is far from certain. But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, monitored seismic activity on the fault's central section between July 2001 and February 2009 and recorded more than 2,000 tremors. The tremors lasted mere minutes to nearly half an hour.

Unlike earthquakes, tremors occur deeper below the surface and the shaking lasts longer.

During the study period, two strong earthquakes hit — a magnitude-6.5 in 2003 and a magnitude-6.0 a year later. Scientists noticed the frequency of the tremors doubled after the 2003 quake and jumped six-fold after 2004.

2. My grandmother used to come visit us in the midwest
every time the tabloids predicted this. But California did not slip into the ocean in her lifetime.

3. I'm glad they're monitoring it.
We always need to be prepared for a huge earthquake.

ALWAYS.

5. The headline is misleading.
The tremors were "found" 4 or 5 years ago (hard to tell from inconsistencies in the story). There is no mention of a recent spike in tremors. The tremors were first noticed after, not before, a major quake.

For maximum scare effect, the tremors were also noticed two days before a big quake.

But, of course, it's been 1500 days or more since these tremors were noticed.

Christ. Why not write about Sadaam's weapons of mass destruction.

8. Oh, shit. I think these "tremors" are what I feel in bed at night sometimes
before I fall asleep. I didn't think they were "earthquake"- related because they seem to go on and on and on sometimes.

Shit, shit, shit.

12. I don't live on the San Andreas Fault
but I can see it from my porch. Really. It's 12 miles south of my house.

Last month we had a small (3.5 magnitude) earthquake whose epicenter was 600 yards south of us. It lifted the house a couple of feet and then dropped it straight down. In 1993 there were back-to-back 7.0+ mag. quakes on either side of the house. We had dueling aftershocks for weeks after that. Now geologists tell us there's a fault running through town (Yucca Valley) that will release "soon" with a force of 7.0+. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in the center of a dart board.

Stay tuned for further reports...

14. A 3.5 did THAT? Wow. When we had a 4 point something, I thought
it was my son kicking his foot under the table.
