Let's be frank, the Greatest Page has always been a bit of a joke.

I have a thread up on it right now that is far from good, and looking back at earlier posts, the stuff that gets the rec's is usually not my best work. And I am not alone, there are many excellent, erudite, informative and clever posts on this board that never make it up on to the greatest page, many of these posts also inspire excellent, fascinating and enriching discussions. There are no Lounge threads on the greatest page, and while this may be overall a good thing, the Lounge has produced some excellent satire over the years. The R/T forum has had some fascinating discussions with great points made, they rarely make it to the greatest.

The "greatest" page has never been truly representative of the best, most fascinating threads on DU, it has been the place for one to find the latest feeding frenzy, pseudo-flamewar or rant. It has always been a popularity contest, and the addition of the unrec feature just amplifies that pre-existent condition. If anything should be changed, it's the name of the page, which should be switched from "greatest page" (a misnomer) to "most popular threads." Because that's all it has ever been.

I've lurked here for years and rarely post, but I can probably count on one hand the times I've looked at 'the greatest'. I just go to the three forums I read regularly here and look for interesting thread titles. Sometimes I'll click on a thread because it has a high number of replies and I'm curious about why. All the 'rec' thing does is show what others are interested in, not what interests me.

I use DU the same way you do. How many of us here work like this? Honestly, I can go months without ever seeing the front page.

perfectly. Too much of what shows up there doesn't reflect well on this site or the members. Your suggestion for a name change has merit.

I also seldom go to any specific forum other than the Lounge where maybe ironically I can find intelligent and open-minded DUers who do not take themselves so seriously.

There are well known DUers out there who can start a thread which simply says, "I farted" and others will fall all over themselves to Rec it so it makes the front page. Meanwhile there are intelligent and well though out posts which drop like a rock.

I don't know what is on the Greatest Page - I never go there, but I have noticed a refreshing change in the top 5, which show up on the home page of DU when I drop in.

I have yet to look at the greatest page.

Could care less what the latest kickfest is.I come to the big forums then any other forums and read what interests me
