Hey! It's Confederate History Month! Awesome!
White southerners want us all to remember it? Wonderful - let's never forget white American history:

Here's a 3 minute interview with a former slave:

1. I don't need an interview, I've spent hours talking to former slaves. We've come a long way but we
have a long way to go and dreams to make come true before we sleep.

13. How old are you?
The WPA had a difficult rounding up a few thousand throughout the USA in 1936 for the ex-slave narratives, and most of them were very, very elderly, and children during slavery days, at that.

Someone born into slavery in 1865 would have been 100 when Lyndon Johnson was president!

Were they actually ex-slaves or people who claimed to be?

Anyone who was set to labor during slave days would have been beyond diapers and the stage of gathering eggs and kindling to have been able to recall slavery per se, which means that they would have to have been born in the late 1850s at the earliest to have a good memory of slavery.

Maybe you were kicking around under FDR, but as a scholar I'm invoking my right of reservation on this one.

16. Instead of Civil War reenactors...
...DU should have flame war reenactors for some of our classic flame wars:

The Terry Schiavo Camapign

First Battle of Denis Kucinich

Second Battle of Denis Kucinich

World War Kerry

etc...

I volunteer to be on the "Tsunami was caused by Bush" side of the 2004 Battle of Boxing Day.

3. We can review why the South lost the war
1. Arrogance of the aristocracy and leadership

A. They withheld the 1860 cotton crop from Europe at a time before the Blockade was in effect because they believed it would bring Britain and France to their knees and that they would intervene on the side of the South
B. They told everyone that a Southern soldier was worth 5 Union soldiers, and said such things like foreign immigrants wouldn't fight and that the Yankees had no cause to fight for(wrong on both counts)

2. Moral bankruptcy of the government

A. Passed the first draft law in America, exempting large slaveowners and others of the educated/wealthy class-it became a poor man's fight.
B. Enshrined the institution of slavery into their constitution--this, coupled with Lincoln's brillient Emancipation Proclamation (which didn't really free any slaves, but set a moral tone)kept Britain and France out of the conflict-British mill workers said they would support the Union because they were for emancipation-and wouldn't work if Southern cotton were imported.

3. Lack of good generals in leadership positions

A. Basically, by 1863, the only good Southern general left was Lee. Albert Sydney Johnson was killed at Shiloh; Jackson at Chancellorsville. The other generals were just not up to it.
B. Jefferson Davis interfered with his generals, taking away commands from more competant generals and putting in his buddies-and creating a disaster in the process (sound familiar? Has anyone found that Davis and Bush are related?)

6. Don't forget that the Union had the southern ports, except for Wilmington, NC blockaded
pretty much from the get-go, and had complete control of the Tennessee/Ohio/Mississippi River system after April of 1863, leaving Tennessee and North Alabama and Mississippi free for invasion as the CSA was concentating on the defense of Richmond and forays into Maryland and Penn. then.

Plus, the CSA didn't stock up on arms when they should have if they really wanted to fight a winning war before seceeding.

After Harold Selesky's graduate seminars at U. Alabama, I am convinced that the South bought into the fire eaters such as Yancy and Ruffin and got swept along with the tide rather than analyzing how futile a fight it was and that the sheer overwhelming determination of the USA to preserve itself was not recognized by the CSA, thus a total war was not out of the question, as the CSA thought it would be.

The CSA also outlawed the growing of all but foodstuffs by the way! No tobacco or cotton or sugar could be legally grown in the CSA by 63. Jeff Davis actually contemplated freeing any slave who would bear arms for the CSA by late 64.

If they want a Confederate heritage month, then have it, but it will be a story of futility, immorality, and suffering the likes of which the North American continent has not known since or before, save for the immolation of the First Nations.

11. excellent points
and I agree with your analysis. I don't think that many in the South at the time realized the "sheer determination of the USA to preserve itself". I've read a diary of a Union soldier called "All For the Union", a phrase he used often. This was his motivation--not freeing the slaves (of which he said little--though he appeared to look on them as exotic creatures). The German Americans in my family joined the volunteer units in Illinois to prove their worthiness to be citizens of this country, and my great great grandfather got his citizenship while serving for the 13th Illinois Cavalry.

25. oh cool, i always did want to learn more about switzerland
Confoederatio Helvetica, the country's official Latin name, means Helvetic Confederation. The use of Latin avoids having to favour one of the four national languages. The abbreviation (CH) is used for the same reason. The titles commonly used in French (Confédération suisse), Italian (Confederazione Svizzera) and Romansh (Confederaziun svizra) translate as "Swiss Confederation", while the German name of Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft translates literally as "Swiss Oath Fellowship" or "Swiss Commonwealth of the Covenant". The term for a native of Switzerland is Swiss (German Schweizer, singular male Schweizer, female Schweizerin; French Suisses, male Suisse, female either Suisse or Suissesse; Italian Svizzeri, male Svizzero, female Svizzera).
