maybe there is a better answer to the unrecommend issue
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 11:02 AM by onenote
I've stayed out of the debate so far, mostly because I don't use the Greatest Threads feature to decide what to read. But maybe the answer (and I have no idea if this is practicable), isn't the unrecommend feature, its simply raising the bar for when something gets on the greatest page. IMO, something shouldn't get on the greatest page until it has attracted recommendations from at least 30 discrete posters. That would focus the greatest page on threads that have on their own attracted a significant amount of attention (and would make it harder for a small group to hijack the greatest page, which I understand to be one of the problems the new feature is supposed to address)and would then bring them to the attention of other users who choose to rely on the Greatest Thread feature to find interesting topics rather than search for them.

Fire away.

1. I have no problem with raising the threshold to make it to the GP.
The unrec allows for posts that reach the current threshold, be undone, or taken down.

4. Agreed. Raising the threshold is a good suggestion
One of the reasons why unrec has bothered me is because it can be (and apparently is) used as a tool to actively remove threads from the GP. Raising the bar makes more sense than having a mechanism which can yank topics on and off the GP like a yo-yo.

2. You can be certain, the fire is coming.
Not from me, mind you. I appreciate your sensitivity and suggestion.

3. And, four hours later ... silence.
So much for my powers of prediction.
