How Willie Nelson Saved America
Back in the bad old days of 2002 - 2003, the Bush Republicans seemed unstoppable. The entire country still in a rage from 911 and the media stoking the fear and anger as much as possible. It seemed that the GOP was more interested in attacking their fellow Americans who are Democrats than catching Bin Laden (hmm, still seems that way to me).

ClearChannel was organizing anti-Dixie Chicks *record burnings*. Tom Delay was using the federal Department of Homeland Security to chase down the Democrats who had fled to state to prevent illegal redistricting.

Then Willie stepped in and stopped the GOP juggernaught in its tracks. The Outlaw Cowboy sent his signature red bandanas and a case of whiskey to the Democrats holed up in Oklahoma, encouraging them to "stand their ground." Willie defended the Dixie Chicks. I will never forget a comment on read on FR when some con said "Sorry, I'm not burning my Willie Nelson albums. I've got too much invested." Willie's public stand gave a lot of people some breathing room to dissent from the GOP that they didn't have before.

God Bless Willie Nelson.

31. The Man In Black was all about
Justice and Equality and "hated this war"(so said his daughter, Roseanne Cash..and no, I don't have a link).

Johnny Cash passed in 2003..I wish he could have lived to see the country come around to the reality of the bushits.

7. Sweet Willie. Here's a link

Sounds just like him. Here's a link from US News and World Report:

Texas standoff
Nobody knew quite what to think when 51 Democratic Texas state legislators fled across the Red River into Oklahoma under the cover of night. Their mission: to block a vote on what they called a naked grab for power by the Republicans--a redistricting bill that could create as many as six GOP congressional seats at their expense. Robbed of the 100 members needed for a quorum, GOP state House leaders eventually caved. And the Killer D's (as fans called them) returned after four days on the lam. At one point, Texan and U.S. House Majority Leader DeLay, who was cheering on his GOP brethren from D.C., had tried to get the FBI or federal marshals to intervene. The feds took a pass, and the state couldn't touch them across the border. The rebels were hailed as heroes by Democrats, called "cowardly" by Gov. Rick Perry, and given booze and red bandannas by Texan country-singing legend Willie Nelson. "Way to go," he told them. "Stand your ground." The redistricting bill is dead, at least for now. But DeLay says Perry told him he'd call a special session to resurrect it. "We'll get it to the floor eventually," says bill sponsor Phil King. "And when it does, it'll pass."

What are they gonna do? Tie up the Dems?

15. I love Willie
I'm not a big country music fan, but Willie is different. Not only does he do a lot of good, and make great music - he will stand for 3 hours after a show, until he's met every single person who is waiting to meet him. I got a kiss and hug from him once, when I was expecting a handshake. He's a national treasure!

18. Willie is the coolest singer I have ever met!
I worked for a airline company a few years back, Willie arrived with his sister and entire band from South America.
While the others went to the Club to refreshed them self, Willie took off!
I went looking for Willie and there he was clear on the other side of the airport just people watching. He was ever so alert and interested in what the people around him where doing.
Yes, he was wearing his bandanna and his hair was braided.

I walked up to him and the old guy looked at me like a little kid who has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I will never forget that look, what a twinkle in his eye.
We walked back to the club arm in arm singing our heads off at 0500 !
What a GREAT person, that Willie Nelson!

25. I love Willie, but, he has a bad habit
of pulling washed up people off the trash heap and kick starting them again. fucking toby keith being a prime example, if Willie hadn't pulled his sorry ass from the trash can we wouldn't have had to put up with the trash and nonsense that spewed out of his mouth.
On the other hand, I've got to admit that Willie is a much better person than I am, just for doing this.

30. Hate to inform you, but Toby Keith was having much success
Before Willie "propped him up". If anything, it was the other way around, and Willie's first time on radio in a long time.
