Norquist group warns against healthcare surtax
@ 1:17 pm by Michael O'Brien

The fiscal conservative group Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) put lawmakers on notice Monday, saying that a vote in favor of a surtax on healthcare benefits would violate any pledges they'd made to not raise taxes.

The group, which circulates anti-tax pledges for members of Congress, warned signatories of their pledge against voting in favor of a surtax to help finance healthcare reform legislation.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) has proposed doing such a thing, but Democratic lawmakers in the Senate have been skittish to sign onto Rangel's initiative.

(Rangel is expected to trek to the White House today to discuss his proposal.)

ATR, though, drew a line in the sand for lawmakers on the fence about the surtax, warning that the "surtax to pay for government medicine is a taxpayer protection pledge violation."

ATR was founded by conservative activist Grover Norquist.

1. Fuck Grover Norquist a republican pig in the truest sense, a hater of workers & unions & especially
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 02:30 PM by LaPera
the poor....this republican piece of shit Norquist has forced & threatened the republican minority Senate & Assembly who run California to ensure a budget will never pass in a broke state that absolurtely needs more taxes to pull it self out of the pit.

After all these tens of years of republican two-term governors rule, (Reagan, Deukmejian, Wilson & Schwarzenegge) and along with the fucking minority republicans in the California Legislature, who veto any budgets put forth by the Dems (a 2/3 majority is needed to pass any budget legislation)

The republicans, the wealthy & greedy corporations certainly don't care nor will they ever consider helping average Californians whom the republicans like Norquist despise.

Grover Norquist truly is a liar and a greedy hateful republican pig! The fact that he has so much power & influence over republicans typifies why pigman Limbaugh has so much power over republicans - The more greedy, the more powerful, the more racist, the more hateful & selfish are the ones the republicans worship and bow to as their god.
