Yarrrgghhh! Bigmouth right-wing wacko contractor working on my house!
zOMG I am just about ready to go off on this guy. He will NOT shut up and it's like hearing Free Republic brought to life in my own house! (He's talking to his coworkers; I'm in the living room trying to work.) First he was ranting about how Michael Jackson was a child molester (I have no opinion on that either way, but I guess he doesn't know what the word "acquitted" means); now he's going on and on about how we HAVE to model our government on the bible because if we don't "we're acting like we know better than Jesus!"
:wtf:

I should note that this guy is not the owner of the business. The owner is here, as is his father, also working, and they are the nicest guys you'd ever care to meet. But this other one...gaaah! :banghead:

They're working quickly, which means he'll be outta here in a few days' time, give or take, and thank goodness. But I might have to make myself scarce until they're done; otherwise I fear my blood pressure will suffer. :grr:

8. Absolutely. And incidentally, I know plenty of non-rightists who likewise thought MJ quite guilty
...had to add that if suspecting MJ to be guilty of child molestation is being culturally assigned to rightists only ... which if so = nonsense.

But yeah, if you're paying them to be there, tell him you're uninterested in overhearing his personal philosophies, and if he becomes confrontational, take it up w/the owner, who, in all likelihood has had to muzzle this guy in other similar situations (unless they primarily only work for conservative home owners)

His employer (or health insurer) is not going to be so generous - or even friendly - after the accident.

38. That's what I was thinking!
I wish we had a good sound system that would reach into the area of the house they're working on. I just listen to streaming stuff on my laptop; Mr. MG's receiver doesn't have speakers either--he uses headphones.

This is what I would say to the owner.

"Look, I'm paying you guys to do this work. If I had wanted to hear some idiot spew rightwing garbage I'd turn on my television, tune into Fox News, and turn it up as loud as your jerk employee. Either take care of it now or pack up and leave. I won't pay for that kind of crap."

Inform boss politely but firmly you don't want Rush Limbaugh raving right outside your window while you're trying to work - at least turn down the volume to non-intrusive.

Jeebus, it's your home; you shouldn't have to even think about leaving.

12. It's very unprofessional of him to express unsolicited personal opinions.
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 01:40 PM by lpbk2713

Particularly when he is a guest in your home. Do you have any bumper stickers on your car or anything else that would tip him off as to how your political sentiments go? If so, he isn't just expressing an opinion here, he is harrassing you. You need to call the prime contractor right now and tell him to get this clown to pack up his shit and GTF out of your house ASAP. Contractors know word-of-mouth is the best form of advertising. So if he is reluctant to do anything about this moran just let him know you will be more than happy to spread the word.

13. we did a major renovation a few years ago. We made it
clear right from the start (since we knew this was going to take a while, and we continued to live at the house), that we didn't want rightwing radio on while we were home. The market is so competitive right now for contractors and crew, they should be cognizant that driving up in pickup trucks with Confederate Flags and A Good Liberal is a Dead Liberal is not a way to win contracts.
I've turned away painters, firewood guys, and tree and lawn service crews because I didn't want their vehicles parked in front of my house with hate-filled bumper stickers.

23. During our house build one worker had right wing radio on all the time
I made it clear that I would not permit that. In fact the first time I heard it, I did not recognize who was talking (I am still not sure since the only time I hear that crap is when Olbermann replays stuff) but it was so full of hate I made a crack about the content. The worker said, "Oh you must be one of those liberals." I responded, "Damn straight. And I'm paying the bills here so if you want to keep working you will turn that off when I am here!"

He did, but that is the worker that single handed delayed the completion of our house by months by nailing a waterline and ruining a finished floor and walked off the job before we found the window he had also ruined by nailing. Thinking back, I wonder if those incidents were on purpose?

30. Had a coworker who went in for an oil change and got TWO flat tires the next morning
evidently because his car had an Obama sticker. The garage is owned and operated by a RW born-again "Christian". The owner blamed the "road debris" and "careless driving" which was "out of his control"...

41. Frame it in a non-political way - tell the business owner you are working in the house
While they are working and the loud discussions that are not pertinent to the job are distracting. Then they would have no reason to take it personally - hopefully. But yeah, it is a concern. Of course, you could just bear with it until the end and then let the owner know that you are less likely to recommend him or use him for projects in the future because of being subjected to this crap. Most good contractors know the importance of word of mouth advertising to get jobs and will take that seriously.

I once told my supervisor that if he didn't find someone other than Rush on the radio that I was walking off the job. My co-workers backed me up and he turned it to country music. Not a big improvement bur better.

15. Stop work order
Whenever I had to deal with bullshit, I'd put in a stop work order and start discussing how long it would be before a contractor's lien would be paid. I hope you haven't given these yokels an advance. If not, tell them the job is over NOW, you will be getting a replacement to finish the job, and you will pay them the difference between the new bill and their original estimate.

because it would mean no wars, money spent on the poor, and for social programs to help them. It would definitely have socialist/communist elements to it, since Jesus was all about sharing the wealth.

I hate it when this happens. I had a guy over putting in some flooring in the kitchen and the ASS kept going on and on with RW talking points - one after another. I didn't say anything - UNTIL HE WAS FINISHED. I also have the same "don't give them a chance to spit in your food" philosophy.

40. I agree
Even though the boss is right there, sometimes he goes out to get supplies or leaves this guy behind to continue the carpentry while he has to take care of other stuff. If the guy was being "babysat" the entire time, I'd feel more comfortable saying something to the boss now rather than later.

I don't have a problem with saying something to the boss once they're finished--kind of a "hey word to the wise" for future clients.

He was SO NICE to me, both before and after his diatribe. (Bet he wouldn't be so nice if he knew I was a rabid liberal AND a witch!) I make the mistake of thinking these guys are raving lunatics at all times, but they're not. He has done good carpentry work so far, too, so I don't want to piss him off mid-job for sure. I think I'll talk to the owner after they're done. He is really a good guy and I think he'd be upset if he knew it bothered me.
