I demand not only dramatic change in the un-recommend feature, but also:

• A re-launch of the Nuclear Ignore feature, but with the added twist that you will ignore and be ignored by people completely at random.

• A return of the "Ask the Admins" forum, because dammit, that was funny as hell. Also, we could put all posts like this in there.

• IMMEDIATE change in the colors of the bars in polls. I tire of them, and if I'm not happy about the poll function, heads will roll.

• While I have your attention, what the hell is a pencil doing as the "post" icon? Who had that dumb idea?? I'm going to have to explain to my daughter what the hell a pencil even is when she's old enough to get on the web. By which point she'll be posting on DU via a USB hub that goes into her left nostril.

Further demands will be on my Twitter page, when I get around to starting one, about when hell freezes over.

will there ever be a point where the anti-unreccers, assuming their dire predictions do not come true, will say "We were wrong. It hasn't been as bad as we thought"? Or will the protesting just go on and on?

If we're still complaining about a software change this far in, it might be time to take the complaints to management, because I think very few minds are being changed via debate at this point in the game.

(The converse is true for the pro-unreccers, but I haven't seen a legitimate argument yet that the Greatest Page or the state of DU is worse since the inception of the unrec feature.)

but I think we now see a true reflection of what the DU community believes to be the Greatest threads. The cream rises to the top. Now both sides have a choice as to whether to affirm a thread as the greatest or not.

To tell the truth, in the time I have been here I still had to look to find out how to get to the Greatest Page. I am just not obsessed with the number of Recs because I know there are people here who may post and say anything and others will fall all over themselves to Rec the threads. Recs are not a true reflection of the quality of a post. There are posts made in the middle of the night which few read or notice.

But if Skinner says he wants the Greatest Page to focus on the things that unite us (as opposed to those that divide us), this thread's appearance (along with Laurab's, WillPitt's, and LynneSin's) demonstrates that the new unrec function is not doing its job.

This topic, obviously, is dividing us. If unrec worked, this thread would not appear on the Greatest Page.

I've read your question several times, and I still don't understand it. Is your contention that because an unrec thread was featured on the Greatest Page, that that proves a division in DU? Because I don't understand that logic. It just proves (to me) that Robb's OP (which is a joke) is being rec'd for comedic value or whatever.

Again, it is hard to convey emotion through a screen, so please understand that I am asking this question sincerely. (I will issue a disclaimer that I haven't had my afternoon cup of coffee yet.)

And I will try to respond in kind to your question, which I appreciate your asking. I hope I can make myself clear.

Either way, this is decidedly a divisive topic, and if the admins' intent with this function was to keep divisive topics off the Greatest Page, then it is not succeeding. It is allowing greater exposure to majority opinions on divisive topics. It's not keeping them off the Greatest Page.

There were no links provided to the other threads you referenced, but I assume that they are unrec/rec-type threads as well. If so, hopefully these divisive threads are an anomaly that will subside when the unrec novelty wears off.

But yeah, now I get it. And you *are* one of the most civil posters here. I probably would have lost my temper on some of the stuff you let slide the past few days, and I try real hard not to react when I am so obviously baited.

Some threads gets dozens of replies and stay on the front pages of forums for days, others sink into the archives without a single reply. I cannot understand how True Progressives(TM) can allow this blatant censorship and suppresion of unpopular ideas to continue! Any time you reply to a thread that already has a dozen or more replies there should be a 42 percent chance your reply actually is posted in another thread chosen at random. (Threads about the Olive Garden are exempted, obviously.) Anything less smells like fascism to me.

I mean just look at all the intelligent and stimulating conversation here....This harms your own argument that it is working.
