USNews: GOP insiders predict that Democrats and Bush will find a compromise on the Iraq funding

Avoiding a Duel Over Iraq War Funding

Some Republican strategists with close ties to Congress predict that Democrats and Bush will find a compromise on the Iraq funding standoff sooner rather than later. One possible outcome: The White House accepts some form of nonbinding "benchmarks" for success in Iraq as part of legislation to increase supplemental funding for the war, while at the same time the Democrats delete a mandatory-withdrawal timetable from the funding bill. "When the president says, 'Send me a bill to support the troops,' he has a lot more impact than the Democratic leaders do, because they have so many voices," says a GOP insider. "But in the end, there's got to be a deal." One problem: Antiwar Democrats could prove to be just as inflexible as Bush.

1. Uh, what the hell makes them think Bush would accept nonbinding benchmarks?
It still has the appearance of reducing presidential power and let's be honest here... aside from shame, which Bush doesn't have, what political incentive does he have not to use US troops as warm bodied hostages for political hardball here? What?

2. "some GOPers" say that do they?
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 09:45 AM by Robbien
A whole story made up of "some say" and "unidentified GOPer this" and "unidentified GOPer that".

A story just trying to keep mud in the waters and blame anti-war Dems if an additional emergency funding bill for the defense industry spending is not brought up for a vote and successfully passed in Congress.

3. waiting to see, but although I have hopes for congress, I'm usually disappointed...
...and am fully expecting to be disappointed again. There are only two ways to stop this madness-- impeach Bush and Cheney both, or cut off the funds for the war. Either strangle the beast or cut off its head. Congress must do one or the other to get America out of this morass.
