The story of the "unrecommend" feature in smilies.

So, one week ago tomorrow, the wise and benevolent Admins of DU announced a new feature -- the "unrecommend" button.

"O, DU denizens, we bring you the fruit of much thoughtiness and java scripting."

And lo, a great multitude rose up and spake,
"Verily, O Benevolent Guardians, we have gazed upon Thy Works and are most pleased!"

I have to admit, it makes me curious as to what's the motivation behind the unrecs. I mean, even Skinner gave this thread a thumbsup -- to my amazement and delight.

It's not a big deal of course -- however I'd love to hear from those who voted to unrec, because I'd like to know what they are objecting to.

now we have an unrecommend feature whose proponents almost without exception have praised the ability to unrecommend anti-obama undesirable posts.

What's not to like about that timing? Just asking...

I'm beginning to think many progressive democrats need to switch parties so we can have the same influence that republicans enjoy with democrats. Then we can hold democratic leadership accountable for the contract we signed - "we worked, supported and voted for you, and got our the vote. In return, you work hard at turning hope into change.

I guess its just easier to support our president by calling us bitch and moaners and hit the report an anti-obama post unrecommend feature.

Jumping on the bandwagon, I've proposed a few improvements -

1. A scarlet letter next to your name for too many anti-obama unrecommended posts

2. A system whereby an anti-obama post unrecommended sentiment sends your post to a special Democratic Underground Free Speech Zone.

It's just a matter of time.

Plus, since I haven't been tombstoned (so far), I like to think that I've learned a few things about working on the margins.

There will be no "Third party". The system isn't set up that way.

Our choices are activism within the Dem party structure, and activism outside of the electoral system.

I have been advocating for the latter for many years, and I will continue to do so.

I am a leftist, not a Democrat.

Ha - I always say I'm a liberal not a democrat.

As republicans move more and more to the right, the vacuum is being filled with willing "democrats". Its been an unfortunately successful strategy from the democratic and republican point of view.

I had a swim coach who occasionally made us train with hugely exaggerated technique to accelerate our training. It conditioned us to more readily accept what wasn't normal. The repubs know that they are on the fringe with Palin, Limbaugh, et al - the constant exposure is desensitizing us to their vision of a corporate style proxy government that accommodates torture and wiretapping and banking fraud, etc with wink and a nudge. Blazing trails on the extreme right, so anyone or anything else looks "moderate". And that definition is inching rightward year after year. Palin is a horror show. She still pulled in a huge number of votes! Yet the same media who pokes fun at Italian government running silly candidates, treated her with great credibility. And they still talk about her "power". WTF?

So we shrug it off. What should be outrage and mass protest is just a yawn and a plea for inaction as our democratic leadership runs in circles, bargaining away mandates to the repubs, so unwilling to fight for what is right. Meanwhile, we're so busy slamming republicans and so intolerant of self criticism, we can't see the ineffectiveness of our own party. It should not take a Bush, Cheney and Palin McCain freak show to gain respect. Think about it - why did it need to get that bad? Cheney and Bush were really f'd up politicians. These guys still got a scary number of votes. We need to dominate the political and policy agenda. People need to vote for democrats rather than against republicans. I believe we struggle because our leadership is not transparent and barely effective.

After 35 years as rock solid dem as grass roots worker, just a scary amount of time and cash spent, time for me to change to third party. I used to laugh and ridicule Nader and third party protest votes. I was wrong. I'm there. A bit slow, maybe, but I finally get it.

Oops, sorry to sully a perfectly good paranoid rant.
