"I am hereby submit": Has CNN cleaned up Monica Goodling's resignation letter?
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 12:36 PM by drm604
In http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=2797585&mesg_id=2797619">this "Latest Breaking News" thread in post #16, Sabra links to this CNN article and gives this quote from Monica Goodling's resignation letter:
"I am hereby submit my resignation to the Office of the Attorney General, effective April 7, 2007. It has been an honor to have served at the Department of Justice for the past five years," Goodling said.

As of today, that same CNN link gives the quote as follows

I am hereby submitting my resignation to the Office of the Attorney General, effective April 7, 2007. It has been an honor to have served at the Department of Justice for the past five years

This article http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7006973377 currently shows the quote as Sabra posted it, "I am hereby submit". I'm assuming that Sabra was quoting the CNN article as it was at the time of the post.

I've seen the "I am hereby submit" quote in numerous other places. Has CNN cleaned up the quote, and if so why? Apparently it got past the editor the first time, did someone pressure them to change it?

Some might argue that it's a minor quibble and that an editor was simply cleaning up some bad grammar in the article. However, I would argue that, if the original is indeed what Goodling wrote, then it's an important part of the story. It's important for the public to know the quality of the education of the people that are being placed in important positions. It highlights the claim that ideology is being placed above competence in hiring and , in my opinion, it may show the difficulty in finding properly educated competent people who hold to the desired ideology.

Do we have any proof as to which is the correct quote? Does anyone know where it first appeared? It seems unlikely that CNN would misquote someone in such a grammatically incorrect way.

On edit: Here's some CNN contact info. Let's ask them about this.

34. Ah yes, Oral Roberts.
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 11:49 AM by drm604
This guy started out as a typical faith healing televangelist. I had a family member who was into him for a short time years ago but fortunately they pretty quickly saw him for what he was. IIRC He "sold" (gave in exchange for a donation) things like vials of oil and "prayer cloths" (handkerchiefs) that he had prayed over. He solicited donations from sick people by claiming they would be healed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_Roberts

In 1987, during a fund raising drive, Roberts announced to a television audience that unless he raised $8 million by that March, God would "call him home" (a euphemism for death). Some were fearful that he was referring to suicide given the passionate pleas and tear that accompanied his statement. He raised $9.1 million. Later that year, he announced that God had raised the dead through Roberts' ministry. TIME carried this article in their July 13, 1987 issue and included testimony by his son, Richard Roberts, who claimed that he had seen his father raise a child from the dead. That year, the Bloom County comic strip recast its character, Bill the Cat as a satirized televangelist, "Fundamentally Oral Bill".

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,964970,00.html

So far, 1987 has been a checkered and chastening year for the Rev. Oral Roberts, 69. Last January the Tulsa-based TV evangelist announced that if he did not receive $8 million from donors by March 31, God would "call me home." The money was raised, but Roberts' dramatic ultimatum provoked widespread derision. He drew additional gibes by declaring that his wife Evelyn had come to his rescue when the devil visited his bedroom and tried to strangle him. Then, in May, Roberts mailed 1 million packets of "healing" water to followers, advising them to use it to "anoint your billfold" to solve money problems and "anoint your body" to allay physical ills.

The controversy produced by those episodes, however, has been overshadowed by Roberts' latest extraordinary claim: God has used him to raise the dead. Before an audience of 6,000 at Oral Roberts University, the evangelist said, "I've had to stop a sermon, go back and raise a dead person," adding good-naturedly, "It did improve my altar call that night." Roberts provided no details. Later his son Richard, 38, expanded the revivification claim, asserting that in 50 or 60 cases Oral and other ministers had raised the dead.

http://rightweb.irc-online.org/groupwatch/cbn.php

The CBN University, established in 1978 by Pat Robertson, has graduate programs in media. In 1987 Oral Roberts University gave its law school and its $10 million law library to CBN University.

<snip>

CBN University changed its name to Regent University in January 1990.

So this so-called faith healer indirectly brought us Monica Goodling. When we were all laughing at SNL jokes about this guy we never dreamed that he could be a threat to the constitution.

11. "May God bless you richly as you continue your service to America,"
...is what I'm more concerned about. It could have been an oversight on Goodling's part - she fired the letter off quickly and didn't thoroughly proof it. Or AHH/CNN were sloppy. It's not like CNN ever makes "mistakes":

12. I don't know if CNN cleaned up the grammer
but as far as the quality of education, there was a good article in the Boston Globe about Regent Law School, Ms. Goodling's alma mater.

http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2007/04/08/scandal_puts_spotlight_on_christian_law_school/?page=1

Regent is a 4th tier law school. It would not surprise me in the least if Ms. Goodling's letter needed to be cleaned up.

See also this article from yesterday's Washington Post on Regent.

Army of Bens

I've been waiting for the Army of Bens to make their mark on this country. For those of you who aren't familiar with these kids, they're the generation of Americans who received all of their education from conservative homeschools, Christian elementary schools, Christian prep schools Like Patrick Henry Academy, Colleges like Pensacola Christian College, and law schools like Regent University.

To be honest, I didn't expected the Army of Bens to start influencing society until sometime in the next decade, but with 150 Regent Law grads serving in the administration now, the Army of Bens is a force to be reckoned with.

I'm very pleased with this development. Take a look at Regent's first year law requirements and you'll understand why:

31. Wonkette's got it
http://wonkette.com/politics/resignations/gonzales-top-gals-web-secrets-revealed-250802.php

Some selections:

Her father won a "metal" of honor

She mentions a "togo" party

She misspells Ashcroft (John)

She writes:

"For centuries it has been known that the greatest duty of being a parent is to raise the child. And yet, study after study shows that millions of America’s children are neglected every day. The reason for this failure to act must be due to a change in parents’ philosophies. It is there, in their innermost parts, that the devaluation of their children begins.'

35. Good 'ol Palm Beach Post
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 12:01 PM by dsweet
I didn't like living in Florida, but I just loved the Palm
Beach Post. In their Letters to The Editor, they did not clean
up the spelling and grammar of the contributors, just
sprinkled in a few [sic]s here and there. You miss the full
impact of their opinion when it is not rendered in its native
"freeplish". I really think this trend toward
polishing others words lends their word more credence than
they are worth.

edit: posted as plain text so [sic] shows up.
