neat! a way to add pics with no photobucket acct and no hotlinking!
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 03:20 PM by sad_one
http://imgred.com/

Details: When posting on message boards or blogs, often you want to show or link to an image on another website. Directly showing or linking to that image is called hot-linking. It's generally bad because it leeches bandwidth from the host site, and as a result many webmasters have their servers set up to prohibit hot-linking.

The typical work-around is to do the following:

* Save the image to your hard drive
* Navigate to a free image-hosting website
* Enter the path to the image on your hard drive
* Wait for it to upload
* Copy the new URL and paste it into your message-board or blog post

That's rather tedious. Well ImgRed.com lets you simply enter the original URL in your post as you normally would, but with http://imgred.com/ written before the URL. When this is viewed, the image will be copied once to imgred.com, and from then on the image will always be served from imgred.com instead of the host site. Additionally, a thumbnail is automatically generated, which can be accessed by adding http://imgred.com/tn/ before the original URL.

example: http://imgred.com/http://

example: http://imgred.com/tn/http://

6. I'm glad you posted this -- DU is infamous for stealing bandwidth -

I just figured people around here didn't care because it happens so much.

Maybe they just didn't realize.

By my way of thinking, posts should be deleted if they steal bandwidth with pics.

11. How would the Admins know if an image was hotlinked or not?
I have close to 30 websites. I upload images on my servers all the time to post them in here. Do I need to let the Admins know every site I own.
Why should I have to sign up for a photobucket or photocasket account just to post images somewhere?

Oh, and who's going to volunteer to check the properties on EVERY picture that's posted here and see if they are hotlinked or not?

Do you have a workable solution for this? Bandwidth theft IS a problem, I'll agreee... but my hosting account on just one of my sites has like 250 gigs of transer space and 25 gigs of storage. I've never exceeded bandwidth before. Not bad for $3.99/mo , huh? $10.14 will get you a domain name registered for one year, and 2 months of hosting, the just $3.99/mo hosting fee after that until it's time to renew the domain name next year....

13. it takes less time to right click view image than it does to read a single post.

Delete it with an explanation and the problem will be solved quickly as people learn.

There are photohosting sights that don't require an account (tinypic for one).

Who would volunteer? -- actually we have lots of volunteers around here who check posts to make sure that they are following DU rules. If it were an "alertable" rule violation, lots of DUers would let the mods know. Thats how it works around here -- a very workable solution.

Is it more work for mods? Sure. Is it easy work for mods? yes. Would it increase the credibility of this sight? A little among webmasters and people who know. Like I said, I often check the source of pics when posted on DU and it's amazing how many people just leach off of other sights.

17. I understand where you're coming from, but there is still a LOT of gray area..
When I make a banner or photoshop image I want to share, and let others use as well, I'll post a "steal this image" post, and let anyone who wants to use it either download it or just link to it from my site, using MY bandwidth, with MY permission. Are the mods going to email someone before they delete a picture and ask if they permission to be hotlinking from the site that they are?

There's still too much gray area in the idea of checking every picture, IMHO.

15. oh it aggravates many site owners when other people (non-owners)
hotlink pics from their site on another site. If you are linking from a site that you own, I don't think it *really* counts as hotlinking :hi:

18. I'm not disagreeing with that part at all. But how would the mods,
or someone else who would check a picture's properties, determine with 100% accuracy that the poster is hotlinking, if they have permission to hotlink, or if they own the site? Are they going to run a "who is" on each domain?

That's what I'm trying to understand.

21. oh I misunderstood...i don't know that
I don't have a site...I've just always been told that hotlinking was considered by site owners to be very impolite and unfriendly. So I was happy to find a way to post links to pictures from other sites without being rude!

43. Sorry for the late reply.

I think it would be handled the same way copyright infringements are dealt with at DU. The standing rule is that if you quote more than 4 paragraphs, your post gets deleted. Sometimes put will state that they have permission from the website to do so and generally mods look at the site to see if its true. If your website had such a statement, then so be it. In addition, there is nothing stopping someone from using a photosharing site to share your pictures on forums.

Its not as difficult as I think you are making it. I agree its just one more thing for mods to worry about, but its really easy to manage. I say that because its the rule at some of my other sites (one of them as big as DU) and it works fine.

41. No, it's safe to use
But if it becomes widely used, the server will get overwhelmed,
unless he has some way of paying for more bandwidth and disk drives.

accompanies the reply/edit windows?

that way you can just copy/paste it in front of the picture, without having to type the whole thing, or open a window with the phrase already saved, which is what I do for certain HTML stuff

does that make sense? seems like it could work
