Poll question: Was the two-week suspension against Imus reasonable?
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 08:38 PM by antiimperialist
Do you agree with the two week suspension to Don Imus from MSNBC?

1. racially insensitive
needed the 2 wk indeed! he's fortunate he didn't get axed. I agree with the 2 wk. since he didn't say 'darkie' the n-word or whatever, but is he the one that said "jigaboo", or was it the other guy, McGuirn? If it was Imus, he should be axed, if the other guy, he should be axed. Imus is entertaining, but if he ever uses a term for a black person like those above, on the air, he should go. hopefully it wasn't him, but if so, the producer or whatever should be history.

2. I guess they were following DU's lead.
Suspend, suspend, suspend.

I think Imus should've been canned. His explanation just wasn't good enough for me.

5. I will boycott all his sexist and racist guests, sponsors, and networks from now on
And I will call them and email them and send postal letters. I want his sorry ass off the airwaves.

Cal Ripken Jr. showed a lot of integrity by boycotting his scheduled appearance, what a good role model not to mention heroic athlete.

6. that's cool he did that...
I guess if they hadn't warned him before (because someone listed all the racially charged comments they knew of he's said on here somewhere), then the 2 wk warning, and all this KRAMER-ISH apologizing is good (he even looks like an older Kramer!), because it shows how pathetic he is... but if he's been warned, they shoulda canned him. Again, for me, busing a word like 'fag', or 'nigger' or 'spic' should get these people IMMEDIATELY canned. I want to know which one of the two on the Air said, "jigaboo", apparently one of them did - if it was Imus, close down the show!!!

7. So Jesus was wrong?
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 08:35 PM by antiimperialist
If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him; and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, and says, "I repent," you must forgive him.
JESUS, Luke 17:3-4.

Follow-up:
"Then Peter came up and said to him, 'Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?' Jesus said to him, 'I do not say to you seven times, but 70 times seven.'" Matthew 18:21-22

12. Try the book of Mark. Jesus tells the crowd, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
But then, he turns to the fallen woman and tells her, "Go, thou, and sin no more." Imus has gotten a zillion tut-tuts for past racial slurs. He refuses to learn the lesson. It pollutes the public discourse to let hatred onto our public airwaves. He has the right to use whatever language he wants, but community standards must be balanced with free speech in the private use of a "free" public resource like radio frequencies.

I can forgive Imus on a personal level. But for continuing to perpetuate hate language despite numerous warnings, firing is a reasonable punishment. The people in charge decided to give him a much lighter repremand. So be it; I only hope he'll learn this time and really clean up his act.

16. Besides we do not want to stone him. Just fire his ass. Jesus didn't suspend the money changers.
He threw them out.

17. False analogy
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 08:52 PM by antiimperialist
The money lenders never came back...and if they had come back, he would have forgiven them again, unless he was a flip-flopper.

18. Well we don't know that they never came back and we don't know that he wouldn't
have thrown them out again. Forgiveness does not mean your actions don't have negative consequences and it doesn't mean you can go on sinnin. Besides, you forgive your brother for what he did to YOU, if he is oppressing someone ELSE you stop him first. Then you can forgive him, but you don't put him back in the situation where he can start oppressing people again.

21. That's why it's a false analogy
We know that Imus came back and did it over again. You should have chosen a similar case in which an individual(s) do something wrong repeatedly.
And note that the Jesus' example accompanies the poll option that punishes Imus with a two week suspension, so it doesn't mean condone his actions.

24. ease up - I was responding in a light way to the post. I used the money changers
because it is an example of Jesus being forceful with someone doing wrong. I am not writing a term paper here.

23. Besides, Jesus did not have the power to "suspend" them
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 10:43 PM by antiimperialist
Jesus did not own the temple or have been given any authority over the usurers. He was in no position to do something similar to what MSNBC did.

13. If this were the FIRST time, 2 weeks is about right. But since it is at least the twentieth time
that Imus has said something blatantly racist, sexist, or homophobic and that asshole Barnard says something inappropriate nearly every show and Imus yucks it up, I say no. It is time to close down his unfunny little act.

25. Forgiving someone once is one thing...but if they come back and do it again repeatedly
That's enabling.

That's acceptance.

That's wrong.
