Question-What is acceptable to say here on DU?
Really, I want to know. I got hammered earlier today for saying something supposedly negative about Al Sharpton among other things. Can we not disagree with Sharpton and others like him simply because they are allegedly Liberal? I don't expect everybody to agree with everything I say, but some of the attacks against me were ugly. I'd say that I'm a Liberal, but sure as shit, many many people will attack me for not being Liberal simply because I say I am. So I really want to know. Someone enlighten me.

1. Depends on what you said?
Now if you said that Sharpton is an opportunist....sounds fine to me.

Link to your thread would help.

9. I agree too, but even DU has its rules.
but I wouldn't want to feel restricted in what I say.

4. with 102,000 plus users
there are people who love and hate just about everyone on the left or right. You are only going to hear from the ones who feel you are insulting their hero.

Get used to it - if you are really off, you will be flamed relentlessly by lots and lots of posters in the thread. If you get a couple or so, no biggie - too many people in the big tent to please them all.

Best of luck.

7. A couple rules I find I must remember sometimes.
1. It is ok to ignore people. Don't have to reply to anyone.
2. There will be people who argue and are nasty just to do so, they may not be that way in real life, but the internet gives some anonymity and manners may lack.
3. double check what someone means because assumptions may be wrong
4. If someone double checks what you mean, take it in stride and explain rather than assuming they are bashing you. Even if they are.
5. Be civil.
6. It is ok to ignore people.

5. I could care less what you think about Sharpton.
I can't stand him either.

But, didn't you already post a thread about this earlier today?

6. Bigotry and Broad-Brush Smears

Bigotry and Broad-Brush Smears

When discussing race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or other highly-sensitive personal issues, please exercise the appropriate level of sensitivity toward others and take extra care to clearly express your point of view.

Do not post messages that are bigoted against (or grossly insensitive toward) any person or group of people based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, lack of religion, disability, physical characteristics, or region of residence.

Please note that sweeping statements about entire groups of fellow progressives are not categorically forbidden (except in the case of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, lack of religion, disability, physical characteristics, or region of residence, as mentioned above). However, they are often inflammatory and counterproductive and the moderators have broad discretion to remove such posts in the interests of keeping the peace on the message board.

13. Ah the heck with it
I was just angry about getting hammered like I did. But since there have been exactly two people in DU who have ever met me, and since no one in here really knows me, and since people can say what they want behind the cloak of anominity (sp?), I have decided not to worry about it anymore. I will continue to say what I think, no phoniness here, and if others can't deal with it, I guess that is their problem. It's time to move on to other more pressing subjects. Like impeachment.

15. And you should do just that.
As long as you know in your heart you are not a racist, don't worry about what others here say about you because they would be wrong.

11. I take my cue from the mods
if they lock my thread, or delete my post, then I know I stepped over the line.

If I have a question, or don't understand why, I send an off-line message to the administrators.

This seldom happens; I usually can figure out where I screwed up all on my own.

This I know: It is usually not the content of the message but the tone, or the language that gets me in trouble.

12. I say whatever the hell I feel
Sometimes I get a negative response, sometimes I get NO response, and sometimes folks agree with me. There's a pretty well defined line and if you cross it, you and everyone else would almost surely realize it right away. Other than that. Don your flame retardant suit, and exercise your first amendment right. Fuck yeah!
