Jesus Practiced Socialized Medicine
Edited on Sat Jul-25-09 01:03 PM by EndersDame
I don't believe he checked to see if lepers and the blind and lame had insurance or the ability to pay before healing. I don't believe that said people had to go through an HMO either.

I was listening to my fundie land lady go on about socialized medicine and thought this to myself (I don't want her to "find" a reason to kick us out)

I don't necessarily believe he was the messiah I just think he had some pretty cool things to say .But then again I have always had a soft spot for long haired birkenstock wearin hippies who talk about peace and love

2. Jesus didn't practice "medicine" at all.
He basically practiced voodoo, for lack of a better term.

For what Jesus did to be considered medicine, science would have to be able to test and prove his "methods" and make them available for replication by the general populace. Last I looked, smearing mud on a person's eyes still doesn't cure blindness. Calling out evil spirits from a person's body doesn't cure the dumb. I don't know any reputable doctors who are experts in Jesus-care, do you?

Worse, there was absolutely no social aspect to Jesus' purported healing. He was quite specific in who he would heal and who he wouldn't. Otherwise, as god incarnate, he could have cured all of the world's ills and diseases in one fell swoop.

Come to think of it, Jesus acted more like an über-HMO than anything else.

4. It was just a passing thought
My Land Lady is an Uber Fundie and if I had been braver I would have countered with the argument above.I do not think that he was the messiah, I dont think he preformed miracles I just like his general philosophy

8. I get where you're coming from.
BTW - I don't happen to like Jesus' general philosophy one bit. Can't get into it now, but my reasons are pretty well expressed by Christopher Hitchens in most of the religious debates one can watch on You Tube where Hitch is a participant.

9. Basically, he healed people who believed in his God.

Yes, as you say, he was highly selective. I'll go you one further and say that he was über-fundie-HMO.

10. I disagree, Jesus never purportedly turned healing anyone with an affliction down.

On Earth his existence was more as a mortal; albeit with a closer to connection to God, otherwise his crucifixion wouldn't have meant anything; you can't crucify a God.

His purported healings and teachings had a major social aspect.

Anyone showing mercy regardless of belief was your neighbor, that's what the parable of the "Good Samaritan" was all about.

Furthermore his actions and teachings strongly implied a belief in separation of church and state.

3. Don't confuse Jesus the man with the god of white supremacy.
You would think that being a fundamentalist would mean getting back to the core principals of Christ. Apparently it means rewriting Jesus as a god that hates most of humanity and punishes America for letting them live.

5. That would be like confusing Muhammed with the guy who advocates killing all the infidels
in the name of Allah.

6. Jesus clearly was a Liberal and a radical,
so the conservative establishment found him and his ideas to be dangerous.

12. Yeah she is crazy she believes Obama literally is the Anti Christ
not exaggerating. Due to unforeseen circumstances we are having to go back to Austin (yay!) and earlier than expected. We are hoping she will have compassion with our lease (i believe it could be subleased easily since it is close to a college and the school year is about to start)
