CONSERVATIVE Party of Canada Health Care Platform
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 07:50 PM by Naturyl
So, what do Canadians on the right-wing side of Canada's political spectrum really think about socialized medicine?

The Conservative Party of Canada has released its platform, which is committed to ensuring that all Canadians have access to timely, quality health care services regardless of their ability to pay. They say they are committed to a universal, publicly funded health care system that respects the five principles of the Canada Health Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Hey Canada, I'll trade you our Blue Dogs and DLCers for your conservatives. Deal?

2. The GOP has no right to claim a Conservative mantle
as it is so far to the right of every other Party in the World identifying itself as Conservative.

5. Or conversely, when they claim
this or that Government is "swinging hard to the right", I have to keep reminding them: They are not the kind of "Conservative" they would ever accept or agree with... not in a million years.

6. Yeah, they love to claim places like Sweden are moving right, rejecting socialism, etc
But even the right-wingers in places like Sweden would consider our conservatives crazy and dangerous.

11. Not the islamic dictatorships
Conservatives in Saudi Arabia are farther to the right than US conservatives. But our conservatives are probably further to the right of any other wealthy, industrialized country.

3. I still wouldn't trust them with my life.
The second they get across the border, they would be more free to speak their mind. In Canada, if they came out and said they wanted to get rid of the single-payer system they have up there, the Canadian voters would ensure that you will never hear of that party ever again. They would be voted out of parliament permanently.

4. Agreed. I'm not endorsing them.
Just pointing out the amazing difference between the Canadian political climate and ours.

The whole American political spectrum is skewed very heavily to the right. Our mainstream Democratic party would be a right-wing conservative party in Canada or much of Europe.

7. I would endorse UK Liberal Democrats or Conservatives
before ever supporting Labour in the UK, but then the Labour Government sold the case for war in Iraq on behalf of the most right wing administration in America ever and UK Conservative activists (and MPs) helped the Hillary and Obama campaign teams in the US Primaries.

Topsy turvy World.

14. Blame it on Blair
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 01:19 AM by Prophet 451
When Blair assumed the Labour party leadership, the traditionally centre-left Labour party took a hard swing toward the right. It's probably fair to compare the modern Labour party to your Neocons.

8. Like all Canadians, Conservatives have benefitted from 40+ years of universal health care programs;
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 08:13 PM by chollybocker
...even They are not foolish enough to tamper with a system that the vast majority of Canadians hold near and dear.

Universal health care works, but only if you practice it. Americans will soon (hopefully) find this out.

13. I've mentioned this to wingers I know
Their response to this (and to the British Conservative party, who say much the same) is that the Republicans are the ONLY genuinely conservative party. ANY party that espouses any form of universal healthcare are ALL "socialist" (or their nonsensical twist on the word anyway). As far as they're concerned, ANY form of providing for the public good (that is, all leftist thought) is indistinguishable from socialism or communism (depending on the age of the speaker).

I hate to tell you this but your "conservatives" aren't conservative. They're nutbar ultrarightists, completely disconnected from reality. I don't want to get too much into armchair psychology (especially since I'm not very stable either) but these people are clinically insane, there is an actual psychotic break from reality. While they trumpet "Europe moving rightward", they are also able to claim that the European Conservative parties are "socialist".

I can speak with most knowledge about British politics since I live here. Your Democratic party is further to the right than our Conservative party; your Republican party is, with the exception of the naked racism, indistinguishable from the BNP (British National Party, political arm of what was the National Front). Dennis Kucinich, considered a laughing stock ultra-leftie in the US, would be an entirely respectable LibDem here (albeit with slightly odd personal views).

I wonder sometimes if, in the rightful pride of electing a black man (something which would be 50/50 here), the US has failed to notice that they don't really have any leftist parties. The Democrats are, in general, on the centre-right; the Republicans are on the ultraright fringe and everyone else is nowhere. What that has led to since Reagan, is a political atmosphere where Clinton (probably the most right-wing Democrat to hold teh Presidency since WWII) is thought of as far-left and a moderate-to-centre-right Obama is held to be indentical to Chairman Mao, largely because he nationalised a tiny percentage of business to prevent it's collapse.

It would probably do your political scene no end of good if the DLC/Blue Dog crowd were to split off and merge with the remaining moderate Republicans to create a third party.

16. Here, the right-wingers usually hide their racism.
They generally keep it out of the public eye, although when they get into groups behind closed doors, it sometimes comes out.

17. Sure, and that's the main difference
While the BNP makes little effort to hide their racism; the Republican Party, with a few notable exceptions, understands that society will frown on such talk and so keep it to themselves. The policies of the two parties on economics, immigration, law & order, etc are virtually identical although, amusingly, even the BNP know better than to propose abolishing the NHS.

15. k+r, plus (as an FYI) the Five Principles of the Canada Health Act ...
* Administration. All administration of provincial health insurance must be carried out by a public authority on a non-profit basis. This authority must be accountable to the province or territory, and their records and accounts are subject to audits.

* Comprehensiveness. All necessary health services, including hospitals, physicians and surgical dentists, must be insured.

* Universality. All insured residents are entitled to the same level of health care.

* Portability. A resident that moves to a different province or territory is still entitled to coverage from their home province during a minimum waiting period. This also applies to residents which leave the country.

* Accessibility. All insured persons have reasonable access to health care facilities. In addition, all physicians, hospitals, etc, must be provided reasonable compensation for the services they provide.

18. Fuckers would get rid of it if they could. Hell, they usually try to make it worse
in order to sneak in two tier healthcare, like they do in Alberta (the texas of Canada).

If they just out right said what they really thought, we would string them up and then beat them like pinatas. So they pretend to be for health care, while salivating over the right wing power in the States.

Conservatives are shit wherever you go. Especially the ex-Reform party goose stepping nazis posing as Conservatives.
