Sen. Cornyn "Mistakenly" Calls India a Threat....making huge waves in India
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 11:45 AM by steelmania75
From Huffington Post's Sam Stein:

In the process of defending congressional funding for F-22s last week, Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) accidentally insisted that America needed the oft-criticized fighter jets because of emerging threats from countries like India.

"It's important to our national security because we're not just fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq," Cornyn said on Friday. "We're fighting -- we have graver threats and greater threats than that: From a rising India, with increased exercise of their military power."

It was an embarrassing slip-up, especially for Cornyn, who is known as one of India's strongest allies in the Senate. Shortly thereafter, the Texas Republican apologized and even took down video of his speech from his website.

All of which was not enough to prevent the statement from reverberating in the Indian press, which on Monday gave significant treatment to the story -- though handling it more as a humorous gaffe than an international incident.

All I have to say is what a moron...we'll need India's nukes and natural resources in the third world war against China, Russia, and Iran.

2. I think some people enjoy getting upset.
I read what he said when it first came out and it seemed pretty obvious to me that he meant the threat of a war between Pakistan and India or China and India.

5. Agreed, people misspeak all the time
as long as they correct themselves I don't see a major issue here. He may have meant pakistan and been thinking about defending india against aggression, or something along those lines.

I don't recall people getting all that bent out of shape over the "reset" button gaffe, and that was planned well in advance.

4. He apologized and took down the video, but is that enough?
Shouldn't he be hounded into crawling over broken glass? Or have to eat a bucket of fried grasshoppers? Or some other act that will show that he's been humiliated enough for misspeaking or saying something that we can fake a lot of outrage about? And then, when he does whatever humiliating little task we set for him, we'll demand another and another. Where's Fox News? Where's their high dudgeon on this? Why isn't this 24-7 billboarded there? Cornyn's put us at risk of nuclear annihilation! Aaaaaahhh!!!1!!Eleven!

6. His apology is even worse: "Er.... I meant to insult the Chinese."
At some point, even the Republicans, who have dominated Texas politics for a generation now, should stop and think about how much embarrassment they want to keep subjecting their state to. I don't know when that point will be, but one can hope that it will be soon.

Come on Texans, dump these bigots.

7. Should make him more popular in Pakistan -- maybe he should run for senate there.
;-) Hey, Texas could give him up if Pakistan wants him more.
