Remember Charles Stuart? That wasn't so long ago
Charles "Chuck" Stuart (December 18, 1959–January 4, 1990) was a Boston man who murdered his pregnant wife and inflamed racial tension by concocting a fictitious African-American assailant.

I remember the police's abysmmal performance back then.

Think those attitudes have been eradicated by now?

4. I remember waiting on the corner that night around midnight
for the trolley home and wondering why there were so many cop cars around. Usually it was a lonely wait, the guard kiosk at the entrance to the hospital vacant and no protection for us nurses who worked swing shift.

We knew within three days that Stuart's story was bogus because there was no way the community in that part of town wouldn't have coughed up a perp. It was an incredibly poor area and black folks especially didn't need that kind of trouble, a murdered pregnant yuppie princess on their turf.

There was some good that came out of it: that guard kiosk had a hospital cop in it after that.

I could swear I could remember thinking Dukakis should have brought this up to help answer the infamous '88 debate death penalty question, but if the Stuart incident happened in October of '89, either I was thinking of another incident, or somehow added this ex post facto.

On edit:
After more reflection, at the time I was thinking about other cases where death row inmates were relesaed after review of their case turned up evidence that would clear them (either new or old but suppressed by an ambitious prosecutor). But the Stuart incident was quickly added to later arguments on the same subject (didn't the cops actually get a (bogus) confession from someone? How did that happen?).

6. Remember that goofy "runaway bride" made up some story about a Hispanic couple?

WHich, IIRC, she recanted. Lucky for the local Hispanic community.

12. Same as your's...
false accusations where race may have been an issue... and adding to the Brawley incident, false accusations against police officers.

Why single out my post when there are four other references on related matters?

Are those "NON points" as well?

You mean to tell me that your post was in no way motivated or inspired by the Gates incident?

That for some unknown reason (on a whim), you decided to dredge up a 20 year old case that "inflamed racial tension by concocting a fictitious African-American assailant".

Murder is the key element here? Then where's your criticism of the posters that brought up Ashley Todd, the McCain staffer and the Runaway Bride?

Sorry... you'll have to do better than that.

Tell her what she's won, Chuck...

11. I remember it vividly and getting into arguments because I didn't buy his story from the moment go.
I knew he did it as soon as I heard the scenario involved - drug addicted crackhead carjacks yuppie couple - oh! and the perp is black. The crack cocaine craze, drugs, and crime were all the rage in the news at the time and Stuart's story was just waaaaaay too convenient. Boy, did I feel vindicated when he took a dive off the Tobin Bridge - I so knew he was full of shit.

And yes, the police and the media did abysmal performances - 20 years later they obviously haven't learned much.

14. The other thing that doesn't wash in scenarios like this is the idea that the "perps" would
shoot the woman in the head (almost always fatal or utterly incapacitating at best) but the man in the stomach (not necessarily fatal, especially if the wound is carefully made). Yeah, they will make a shot almost guaranteed to kill the pregnant woman, but the man--who is bigger and not incapacitated in movement in any way by a seven-month pregnancy--he gets an injury from which he can recover.

It's like the Diane Downs shootings. She claimed a bushy-haired man (not black in this case) shot her and her kids, ostensibly because she wouldn't give him her car. Funny, the kids were shot at point-blank range, but Diane, the adult, was merely winged in the arm, from which she easily recovered. One of her kids died and the other two were disabled for life. And, from her prison cell, she still claims she didn't do it.

16. Diane Downs, the basis for "Small Sacrifices"
Farrah did an excellent job in her portrayal of Downs.
