ORLANDO, Fla. -- Florida teens who believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy have prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.

Another myth is that Florida teens also believe that smoking marijuana will prevent a person from getting pregnant, Local 6 reported.

State lawmakers said the myths are spreading because of Florida's abstinence-only sex education, Local 6 reported. They are proposing a bill that would require a more comprehensive approach, the report said. It would still require teaching abstinence but students would also learn about condoms and other methods of birth control and disease prevention.

The bill just passed its first vote in a committee, Local 6 reported.

the life experience to tell them when somebody is goofing on them. Sometimes the disinformation can be fatal, as in drinking bleach.

I remember a lot of stuff just like this circulating back in the 60s when there was little formal sex ed beyond prunefaced "health" teachers telling us nice girls didn't do that until they were married and nice girls didn't like it after it was legal. Birth control was "an aspirin between the knees."

I had a mother who'd gotten into trouble in successive neighborhoods for telling young teenagers what to expect when their periods started, so I knew where babies came from and how they got there, as well as how to prevent it. I think the mechanics discouraged me because I was a late bloomer. My ignorant classmates were early bloomers.

Ignorance was pushed as the way to keep kids from experimentation and it worked out then like it works now, only girls disappeared from school to spend a year with an aunt instead of staying there pregnant or getting abortions.

The problem is ignorance at the time it is most crucial to have the facts, not that kids are stupider now than they used to be. If they're not given the facts, it makes room for all sorts of stupid and destructive misinformation to be substituted.

This is tragic. Blaming the kids because adults have kept them ignorant and ashamed of their own bodies does nothing.

Florida is right. The kids need real sex education.

I doubt the teachers saying "Don't do it until you marry" are saying "oh, by the way, drinkin' bleach will prevent HIV and smokin' weed takes care of the babies, just in case you don't listen to anything else I said before now"...

Here's an idea: Teach the reasons FOR abstinence (personal physical and emotional health AND the physical and emotional health of the person one does it with!! :think: ). And in case the kiddies get creative about bleach, stop the rumor mills before they start.

Now, boys can be boys or boys can be disciplined. Teachers are not to blame for kids' drinking bleach unless the teachers said so. Who the hell around here is going to believe THAT was the case?

Hypothesis A: dumbfuckery is spread by mosquitoes. Hence, Florida.

Ok those probably aren't good hypothetical explanations to test. But just because they are dead end starting points doesn't mean this journey should be passed up. We NEED to get to the bottom of this. If the stoopit continues to take over at this rate, Floridians will soon be raping albinos to get rid of HIV and using Mallomars for contraception.

A while back, 60 Minutes did a piece on the author Carl Hiaasen which naturally also became a piece about Florida. They did note that a lot of shady folks make their way to Florida (think O.J. Simpson, for one). My recollection is a bit fuzzy but I think it had something to do with some kind of tax shelter deal that can be obtained in Florida. Someone with a better memory and more knowledge about Florida will know more.

other states. Divorce, failed businesses and troubles with the law are common among these folks. It's not surprising that poor parenting skills come with the territory.
