to an African-American woman Janet Langhart as "Jungle Fever" -- is THAT racist enough for some people to not let this get swept under the rug? Why are people SICK of these threads? They should be outraged!!

Just heard this on MSNBC interview with Eugene Robinson from the Washington Post. Methinks MSNBC is going to shitcan Im-ass.

1. I hope somebody is going thru his past record of utterings and compiling a list
this guy has a history of this sort of thing. He should be fired. I'm surprised at the number of people in the media who are defending him and saying he should have another chance. Hmm, maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

2. I don't understand why people want to let Imus off the hook.
There are 300 million plus people in America. Surly they can find someone to fill Imus's time slot.

One fascinating comment among many from this particular source:

Quote: "Yes, what he said was stupid and ignorant. However the
whole hoopla around it carried by oportunistic "outragers," in my
opinion, is almost as bad."

4. Imus is horrible, but why do they single him out?
Rush Limbaugh has been as bad. Ann Coulter! Many, many many voices on the right have been just as offensive. So why is everyone calling for Imus's head and leaving the others alone?

There's a guy on Ed Schults right now saying the same thing. "If they're gonna do it to one, why don't they do it to ALL of them?"

5. I'm satisfied with shit-canning them one at a time
Who knows? Maybe some of them will clean up their act when they see what happens to the I-man? And if they don't then they hardly have any excuse: Nobody ever got this treatment before!

This could be the first baby steps in taking back the public airwaves from the partisans and the haters, and giving them back to the people. Clearly, with the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in the 1980s, the pendulum has swung quite far enough in the direction of the so-called "market forces," and it's time that this public trust is more responsive to the people of the public rather than the money of the market.

7. Limbaugh was fired by ESPN for a less offensive comment, Ann Coulter
has been dropped from many papers and has lost television time because of some of her disgusting crap. So I don't understand your argument. Are you saying that Imus shouldn't be fired because Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter can still find an audience?

19. they all need to be held to the same standard
It seems that people on the right are far more tolerant of insulting, offensive talk by their heros. They not only continue, but don't apologize in any way.

At least Imus is apologizing. I don't like his schtick and offensive language at all--watch him only infrequently--, but it just seems that he's being held to a higher standard. He needs to suffer for this--don't get me wrong. But people like Rush deserve it even more--and they seem to escape punishment every time. They lie and smear with impunity. They assign false motives to people on the left and then denigrate them for it. It's just not right.

22. It's not a higher standard, he just has a more limited number of employers.
Sharpton et al are trying to get MSNBC to drop Imus's show. That's one target. Limbaugh is paid by a large number of radio stations who each pay him a syndicate fee, so one would have to go after each of them or after dozens of advertisers. That's been done, often, but with only limited success. The same with Coulter, who is syndicated in papers all over, and also has her books printed by a conservative publisher who doesn't care if she makes money.

It's those who are defending Imus who are holding them to different standards. When Coulter called John Edwards the F word, there was holy hell around here, and no one defended her or tried to keep her from getting dropped. She did get dropped by a lot of papers because of reactions like ours. Same with Limbaugh on ESPN with his Donovan McNabb comments. Suddenly because it's Imus there are people defending him. It sickens me.

the most common of comments - everyone else does it. THis is an opportunity to send a very hard line message. This was a hard line insult to specific individuals. It is an opportunity to target a response. There is no way that anyone is going to get me to dismiss this after reading so many messages about the 'awful' racism and sexism - and then wipe it away with a position that everyone does this.

Maybe that isn't what you meant - but that is what I'm reading on DU in general and I just don't get it.

We just tell the networks and stations to just stop.
But we can get him out of there and if the others don't get the message, they are hopeless.

(paraphrase) "It's good of NBC to let the cleaning lady read the News." He also called the Williams sisters "animals". It is just an on-going state of being with this ass. Let him stay on the air, but boycott his ass and let his advertisers and his stations suffer financially for their support of him all these years. These corporate slave-masters should not be let off the hook just because now they think maybe they should drop him. It's too late, we need a list of all the companies who have supported him over the years and deprive them of our business. You can't apologize for this, you can only become a dead leaf...

11. How many times have they referred to kitchen rags and dishtowels.
I repeat - enter "imus bigotry and any 199x or 200x year' in a Net search and you will find writings of many varieties of racism and sexism. This has been allowed by GE Microsoft NBC who are operatives for the Republican Party - the same people who stole the votes of minorities.

21. Send a list to NBC, WFAN, WNBC today
And don't forget Fox News and our friend Hannity, The ABC network (Disney) Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter and Savage.

I'm SURE you've all had fun today finding all the slurs Imus has said over the decades.

Will you put as much energy into getting a Democrat elected to the White House?
