It is my belief that the Nominees ought to nominate a Secretary of State and Attorney General during the convention as well. They are not elected and should not be...but knowing who the president is going to send up for confirmation for these two incredibly important roles says alot about a nominee's judicial philosophy and foreign policy objectives. It also forced them to select/nominate well qualified people rather than cronies.

The other cabinet members including DOD Secy are typically cronies but are basically managers of the president's policies and the mechanisms of government.

3. Those are two of the "big four"
The 4 cabinet members who are recognized as the most powerful:

They are the Secretaries of:
State
Defense
the Treasury

And the Attorney General

4. I can buy adding Treasury but
Alot of what they deal with is arcane an d the reall runner of the economy is the Fed anyway.

DOD is plausible but the problem is that unless there is a war the SOD is about trimming fat. Do we really want reporters asking the a portential secretary about war strategy or philosphy? Woujldn'tg it undermine the nominee if there is any daylight between them? Maybe the NSA but notthe DOD Secretary
