The right to forgive (or not) belongs ONLY to the victims!!!
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 02:09 PM by The Count
White men cannot forgive Imus for the attack on blacks and women...In fact, I'd say,

if you are not a black woman, you cannot move on!

You have no more right to "forgive" Imus than Reagan had to forgive the Nazis at Bitburg.

Editted to add the rest of the Rutgers members of the baseball team as intended victims.

1. not to mention the arrogance of getting pissy w/ the people who aren't ready or willing to forgive
"i've said i'm sorry already, get over it" - especially coming from a person w/ an established pattern of insults, racism or abuse. an apology from someone like that isn't trustworthy or worth much.

10. racism creates victims - Just ask the people of New Orleans.
No, Imus isn't the only voice of hate out there, and yes he's entitled to his free speech and certainly on air if his station and advertisers really think his crap is appropriate for the airwaves.

But as long as I live, with every breath I take, I will fight to get the power to influence others out of the hands of these bigots and racists. People's lives and livelihoods depend on it.

17. You'll have to show me that statute that criminalizes racism.
Actions are criminal, thoughts are not.

AND sexism. And homophobia too.

DOn't you think that's criminal???

Be careful that you don't end up sounding like you're defending your own right to be a racist. That's too often what's behind charges of "thought police" when the subject comes up in this way.

5. Just think, this man has said stuff like this for almost 30 years
Even making a pledge to Clarence Page to stop the racial insults. He's been informed that this isn't a joke. He reminds me of an abuser who continues to beg for forgiveness after he's messed up.

Why were people outraged with Ann Coulter when she called Edwards the sexual slur? Supposedly she was just joking also. It doesn't matter whether they were joking or not.

What would even make him form those words in his mind, still not rule it out and then go ahead and saying it.

If you borrowed someone's car, got drunk, and had a wreck, do you not owe the person who loaned you the vehicle an apology?

7. Correction: if you're not on the Rutgers women's basketball team.
you cannot "move on".

All the players, black AND white, were insulted by his remarks.

8. Exactly ~ I am a Black Woman and I can't move on with this...
I saw the team members today and I was in tears.

Tears for all the African American women who would love to be able to go to college.

Ones that have excellent grades and no scholarship.

Ones that do not have the ability to dream big enough to feel they can even finish high school.

And here we have a group of young ladies that have such class and dignity and IMUS has a "comedy show" and slams them to the ground.

Imus should be mighty glad that he did not say that about any child of goclark's because he would be looking at papers from my lawyer right now.

22. And let's be really clear: slamming them to the ground
IS the point of racism and sexism. CANNOT let these young women, young black women, get anywhere in life without being reminded -- as forcefully as possible -- what is their proper place.

Good rant. I saw part of it and was SO impressed with these ultra-poised, articulate young women who had more poise and grace than Imus could muster in an entire lifetime.

I'd be proud to have any of them as a daughter. Their coach is no slouch, either.

13. Does the right to apologize belong only to the perpetrator?
There have been outrageous actions in history perpetrated by people who are no longer alive, but some effects of those actions may linger on.

14. Empathy can be expressed by anyone; so, even, can a shared sense of guilt.
But to express "forgiveness" of someone who offended ANOTHER is to steal that act of Grace FROM the offended.

Not to mention that it is a patently absurd act of hubris.

16. What struck me about what the young women said
was that IMUS has NOT APOLOGIZED to THEM yet. He only made a statement to the media about how sorry he was. He never even thought that he needs to say it to them directly before it becomes a real apology. I know he wants toi meet with them but until he does and offers the apology, he hasn't made one!

only the Rutgers basketball team can call for Imus to be fired, right?

I didn't think so.

19. This type of thread is BAD news for DU
Its created to intimidate, its created to silence opposing views, its created to promote a flame war, its creation goes against tolerance and is made to divide DU into different groups. I hate this thread! This is like Freeperland this thread. It gives "standing" to forgive to some and takes it away for others. Can't you see what your doing here?
